Police report two similar armed robberies at Payless Shoe Source stores. In Matteson a white man about 6 foot 2, 250 pounds, 30 to 35, wearing a bandanna, demanded cash from the safe after forcing the door, taking 776. At Cicero Ave a 6 foot 4 white man, 25 to 35, also 250 pounds, in jeans and blue shirt, showed a pistol to workers and fled with over 1,100. No arrests by Saturday morning.

Sheriff’s work crews tackle parks and streets in two villages
Look County Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program sends nonviolent offenders to two South Suburbs villages this week to perform community service. On Monday and Tuesday May 20 and 21, crews will work in Ridges Fork then move to Latters on Thursday and Friday. The program uses DUI and other misdemeanor offenders to swap jail time for public works such as park and street cleaning. For details call 865-4960.

Weather Keith recounts theft discovery and rush of calls
Keith said bank officials found the theft during an internal audit at Graymoor Lane. A 17 year old Matteson woman Brandy Smith began severe contractions while driving and was rushed to Columbia Olympia Fields Osteopathic Hospital and Medical Centers. She was discharged without delivering. The two hours from theft to the labor call kept the department busy with about 20 calls for accidents alarms thefts and disabled vehicles.
