Laurese Perkins a Matteson resident and GSU nursing student died in a ValuJet crash over the Florida Everglades. Perkins, 47, had completed master’s course work and was to participate in June 2 commencement. Family members described her as loving and close to relatives while plans for a Mother’s Day celebration were disrupted.
At the meeting the Crystal Yednak school board set June 5 as the last day of school for Mat teson Elementary District 159 students. They reviewed contracts with the after school daycare provider and food service vendor, approving a bid with Preferred Meals Services at 154,944 dollars though board members criticized the quality. They also discussed Children's World Learning Centers for before and after school care, noting performance concerns and scheduling issues. The board approved a contract extension with Children World for next year and appointed two members to an enhanced playground equipment committee amid safety improvements.
After a lengthy debate Richton Park officials moved to boost the village manager's powers and duties. Trustees debated a provision denying appeal rights for firings, with Trustee Benjamin Hughes opposing the change and urging that employees have a recourse. The village attorney explained the change aligns with state law.
