Columnist Tom Houlihan recounts a riverboat excursion last week as a lighthearted take on gambling fever, noting his lack of enthusiasm amid the casino scene. Page A-11.
Disabled residents protested Pace fare increases set Jan 23 for riders with disabilities. One way rides jumped from 1.50 to 5 for those over three quarters of a mile from fixed routes. Pace cites ADA access limits and lack of funding for non fixed routes as reason. Families fear loss of classes, shopping trips, and doctor visits as service remains at 5 dollars per ride.
In the south suburbs three heated primary contests will appear on ballots one Democratic and one Republican for the U S House. A low key Democratic primary pits the party endorsed candidate against a Lyndon LaRouche adherent as southwest suburban voters face choices in 2nd Congressional District. U S Rep Mel Reynolds seeks re election after defeating Savage two years ago with suburban GOP support.
William Shaw and Allan Streeter enter the Democratic primary to challenge Reynolds. The race has been mostly civil but black south suburban mayors led by Harvey Mayor David Johnson criticized Reynolds for not inviting them to meet President Clinton during his February Hillcrest School appearance.
A wide slate of Democratic and Republican primaries tests loyalties and depth. Democrats vie for governor Burris Nes tch Phelan Gierach and LaRouche ally Jones while lieutenant governor contenders include Sheila Smith and Penny Severns with Anthony Harper. On the GOP side Edgar faces Roeser, Ladd battles Ryan for attorney general, plus limited statewide contests.
David J. Pollack of Richton Park files federal and state suit seeking 1.5 million dollars in damages from Park Forest and officer Ralph Padilla for a Dec 9 1983 false arrest. Pollack says he was held under an alias Brett Dorsett and charged on warrants from multiple towns. He alleges police knew he was not the alias and seeks damages for civil rights violations and imprisonment plus punitive and state claims.
Olympia Fields Osteopathic Hospital and Medical Center says it has no plans to close its Level I Trauma Center but is re evaluating its status within the Illinois Trauma Network. Spokespersons cite recent withdrawals of nearby centers and warn of impact on trauma patient numbers if the Olympia Fields center leaves.
Three Crete-Monee teachers who had Turner as a student last year and this year expressed disbelief at his arrest on charges including attempted murder rape and armed robbery. History teacher Steve Rockrohr recalled Turner as a bright kid who worked hard in 10th grade world history. Gym coach Bob Pieper said Turner was a good student until he left for Richton Park earlier this year.
