Young historian from Mokena pushes history preservation
Twelve year old Matthew Galik turns from a family trip joke about Disney World to a serious local history effort in Mokena. He seeks to reestablish a historical society, stop church demolition of an annex, and oppose downtown plans that threaten a cemetery while writing editorials and interviewing elders. He volunteers with Pioneer Memorial Cemetery restoration, studies Civil War rosters, and urges parents to vacation near battle sites.
