Area men charged in scam involving U of C Hospitals
Three area men Fred Ewing of Riverdale Thomas Wangler of Oak Forest and Douglas Beck of Dalton and Eugene Mizerka of Kildeer are indicted on four counts of mail fraud for a scheme to defraud University of Chicago Hospitals between 1983 and 1991. Ewing allegedly issued work orders to bribe-paying contractors including American Certified Air Balance Inc. and Ray Electric Co. with bribes totaling at least $128,000 and others. Beck supervised materials management and aided the scheme, with payments totaling about $14,353. Each count carries up to five years in prison and a $250 000 fine. The case is before Federal District Court.
