Heat pushes residents to cooling hubs as public pools open for summer fun across the South Suburbs. Strong communal spirit accompanies the season with locals seeking relief, recreation, and relief from the heat.

Matteson officials unveiled a 2.8 million dollar incentive for Sears to relocate to Lincoln Mall, filling a seven year void since Wieboldt's left while Sears shutters its Park Forest Centre store. The plan, tied to a 15 year commitment, followed a 14.8 million dollar package announced with Lincoln Mall management last December.
About 50 neighbors clashed with the Matteson Village Board over a Preservation Trail plan that would circle the village and link with Old Plank Road Trail. Residents warned of gangs and lower property values while officials backed health benefits and alternative transport. Oakwood Park residents collected 200 signatures opposing the plan after four meetings, as the board remained unified and listeners grew vocal.
Richton Park joins several south suburbs in exploring user fees for ambulance calls to maintain services without tax hikes. The village may bill residents or their insurers, aiming for at least 60 percent collection to net about 92 thousand dollars. Some nearby towns already use collection services or in‑house billing.
State Rep. Larry Weinlund invites municipalities along the corridor to join the South Suburban Tollway Planning Council with co-chairs Frankfort Mayor Raymond Rossi and New Lenox Mayor John Nowakowski. The council, including officials and district reps, seeks input on local alignment and interchange locations as Beam Longest and Neff conducts a $5 million design study for the proposed route.
