Former bank executive sentenced for looting safety boxes
Former Advance Bancorp president James A. Fitch Sr., 69, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and a $1 million fine for conspiring with bank officers to steal cash from uncashed money orders and safety deposit boxes over more than 25 years to fund a political slush fund. Prosecutors said Fitch and partners removed $21,000 from a deceased customer’s safety deposit box in 1983 and diverted Social Security payments and uncashed funds.
