The Matteson Will Board unanimously approved buying and installing a new weather siren on Harlem Avenue about 300 yards from Ridgeland Avenue, south of Old Plank Road. The siren will cover 4000 to 5600 feet, cost 10141 dollars, and be installed by Braniff Communications Inc. Local costs for cable and bids are pending, with 38000 dollars in surplus funds available. Fire Chief Wilcox notes tests occur monthly and aging sirens require parts.
District 162 has received 45 to 50 applications for Illinois School the new Choice School for kindergarten through fifth grade. Applications were distributed January 13 and returned after the Martin Luther King Jr holiday. Open in 2000-2001 the school will run August to June with three-week intersessions and $150 weekly workshops. The program offers a unique academic methodology with multi-age groupings and a problem based learning theme across the building.
The Prairie State College Board named Michael Camilli of Chicago Heights as interim trustee to fill the term of Robert J. Hirsch who resigned at the December meeting. Camilli, 44, is a Chicago Heights Police lieutenant since 1976 and also works as a mediator supervisor at the Cook County Sixth District Courthouse. He is a lifelong Chicago Heights resident, a graduate of Bloom Township High School and the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute. Thirteen residents submitted letters of interest. nine finalists were interviewed January 13.
The Crete Monee School District 2010 board heard a plan for a new charter school to serve kindergarten through fourth grade. Sandy Robertson, tied to Governors State University, would run the school with a maximum 66 district students and a lottery if demand exceeds capacity. The board voiced questions while Superintendent Steve Humphrey expressed support and planned a February vote.
The Matteson Public Library seeks residents to fill an open trustees seat with about a year left in the term ending April 30, 2001. Applicants must be district residents and submit a letter to Board President Karen Pastore at 8018 School Ave., Matteson 60443. Duties include hiring a library director, setting policies, approving budgets, and promoting referendums.
