Audit lights new fire over boards in Illinois
Illinois Auditor General William G. Holland faulted the Board of Governors and the Board of Regents for overspending and lax controls in 1990 and 1991. The audits accuse the boards of inflated office leases, mismanaged locally held funds, and reduced minority internships. Lt. Gov. Bob Kustra branded the reports a call to abolish the two boards as a reform push.

Higher ed feud grows as audit targets IBHE autonomy
The auditor general’s report fuels the clash between the Board of Governors and state officials. Chancellor Layzell says creating multiple new boards is not streamlining higher education and may raise costs. The IBHE’s powers and the board’s finances, leases, internships, and a locally held fund are scrutinized, with dissent over lease charges and unreconciled fund handling. Interstate News Service
