Schools Face Real Threats Beyond Grades

Officials in southern and southwestern suburbs claim high schools remain safe but acknowledge frequent discipline problems such as fights theft trespassing truancy and vandalism. They note shootings weapons and sexual assault incidents, citing several cases from Thornwood Thornton Eisenhower Dwight Eisenhower and Homewood Flossmoor high schools. A statewide Illinois survey found 60 percent of students in 31 public schools experienced theft or attacks during 1989 1990.

Mahar presses I-80 corridor plan at Matteson meeting

State Sen William Mahar spoke at Matteson Village Board to discuss I-80 corridor development and a tax increment financing district spanning Country Club Hills Frankfort Mokena New Lenox Orland Park and Tinley Park. Board members stressed cooperation and fair treatment for the 157 corridor while considering similar efforts on the I-57 route. Discovery Zone received a special use permit for an indoor play land at Marketplace Plaza with required first aid CPR staff or guardian presence.

Peotone study gains FAA grant before Clinton takes office

On the eve of the Clinton administration, the FAA approved a 2 million grant to Illinois to start a master plan for a third regional airport near Peotone. The study will last about two years, assess environmental impact and layout, with funds issued in segments. Rep. Sangmeister criticized the timing and urged delay until GAO analysis is completed.
