Academy students embrace service at Blue Island academy
Kelvin Gregory a 6 foot 4 inch 300 pound senior and Kris Hoekstra a 15 year old volunteer at Habitat for Humanity highlight how Academy for Learning in Blue Island formerly Pace High School emphasizes community service. The school named Leader School for 1999 by CNCS due to students visits to Manorcare Nursing Home and Habitat projects. The program aims to reform attitudes through engagement rather than control and reduces expulsion, with strong backing from principal Sylvia Walter and CNCS spokeswoman Jill Bennett.
