HUD Foreclosures in Illinois Prompt Criticism and Probes

HUD faces communication gaps and failed upkeep of foreclosed properties in Illinois. About 3,000 HUD foreclosures exist in the state, with 900 in the 2nd and 11th districts, affecting Calumet City and 20 other communities. Only around 50 properties are currently listed for sale on HUD’s site. The agency previously used In-Town of Atlanta to manage sales and maintenance, but concerns over maintenance, defaults, and local handling spurred meetings with Congress members and Park Forest officials. An In-Town office will open in Calumet City to serve HUD properties south of 95th Street, while HUD evaluates contract terms and local management options.

Route 30 corridors spark historic pride and renewal plans

Local officials promote Route 30 and Sauk Trail as historic corridors to boost tourism and attract state funding for landmark renovations. Plans highlight the Flatiron building as Lincoln Highway eastern gateway, plus Dixie Highway and Illinois Central Railroad as attractions. Heritage tourism aims to turn downtowns into inviting, story-driven destinations.
