Illinois governor signs law barring child sex offenders from parks
The measure, sponsored by Sen. Patrick O'Malley and Rep. Jim Brosnahan, bars convicted child sex offenders from approaching or contacting children under 18 on public park property within 500 feet. Offenders face Class 4 felonies with 1-3 year sentences and up to a $25,000 fine. Oak Lawn officials led the push and the law mirrors an existing 500-foot school rule. Noncontroversial bills also signed include train crossing rules, land transfers to Tinley Park and United Cerebral Palsy Chicago, and a nursing home staffing allowance under strict background checks.
