Boston stands out among big cities for its restrained urban growth and preserved old streets. A Century excerpt notes skyscrapers are rare, while the State House dome dominates the skyline and commercial prosperity feels diffuse.
A special committee recommending abolishing all city boards except the School Board proposes a three member commission headed by the Mayor to run municipal affairs. It would mirror the District of Columbia model and separate Police Court duties from the Mayor. Awaiting General Assembly action next winter to amend the charter.
A Richmond banker and APVA official denied tearing down or insulting the U S flag at Jamestown Island. He was ordered to Washington to explain actions and says he sought a large flag for Jamestown to accompany the APVA banner. A separate prior incident had a small U S flag raised over the APVA flag, leading to rumors of insult.
Richmond reports that the coming General Assembly will consider raising the exemption from tax. Currently anyone earning over 600 dollars a year pays 1 percent, with widespread evasion and calls to amend returns. The proposed change increases the exemption from 1000 to 1200 dollars.
Mount Vernon Hive No 2 of Washington led by Miss Edith Vanneff took second prize with 175 dollars in the competitive drill at the Jamestown Exposition. Richmond Hive No 2 captained by Mrs. Mary E. Robinson won the 200 dollar first prize. judges cited Richmond for the more perfect movement. Third was a hive from Chickasaw Indiana T. Judges were Lieuts A. W. Copp P. H. Bagby and B. C. Wadai U S A.
Richmond special report says Frank P. Burke superintendent of postal sub station B was arrested on charges of taking money from the mails and now faces an additional embezzlement count of 280 dollars from the post office. Burke is on a 1000 dollar bail for allegedly stealing from a decoy letter and was found with marked money.
Mrs. Wilm am Thaw mother of Harry Kendall Thaw touring Virginia with Miss Dohrman F A Dohrman and W McKnight. The group stayed a night in a Winchester hotel without registering, then traveled to Lexington and Natural Bridge.
William Seal confessed to murdering Joseph Smith after luring him to a door Sunday night. Fred Jenkins, Seal's son in law, implicated Seal and then confessed to aiding the crime after bloodhounds traced the trail to his home. Both men are jailed awaiting possible transfer for safety.
Bristol (Special) United States Secret Service men will be sent to Bristol to investigate several blackmail attempts. A Bristol attorney has brought the matter to the Post Office Department. Prominent and wealthy Bristol citizens have received anonymous letters threatening if they refuse certain proposals. The threats' exact nature is not public, but mailing such material is a serious offense.
Walter Moses of Roanoke County, linked to a store robbery, received a five year penitentiary sentence from the Corporation Court for breaking into a bar room with intent to rob. He comes from a respectable family in Roanoke.
The report lists multiple Virginia deaths including Charles I Neff age 25 from typhoid fever in Stanton later noted Winchester chief engineer William P Gore age 25 died at Millville of typhoid. Melissa Pritchard 54 died Suffolk with two sisters surviving. Elizabeth Dueck widow of Timothy Duck aged 92 died Isle of Wight County leaving five generations. Mrs Lewis Kagey 25 died after three weeks blood poisoning at home in Harrisonburg. Mrs Lee Long wife of Page County farmer died after hospital transfer in Richmond.
Massachusetts Governor Curtis Guild Jr led a dedication of a civil war memorial in Winchester Virginia. The ceremony featured addresses by Governor Guild and local officials plus a decoration of the Confederate Cemetery by Massachusetts soldiers. The event drew Confederate veterans and was followed by hospitality at Winchester mayor Harry Baker's home.
The South and Western Railway project by the Carter syndicate with backing from Thomas F. Ryan aims for completion and rolling stock by July 1908. The line spans about 250 miles from Eastern Kentucky to the South Atlantic, with over 38 million already spent and tunnels accounting for more than five million of the cost.
The dry side won in Berryville by sixty two votes as two hundred eighty two ballots were cast. Berryville had been a wet town for twenty four years.
