A Milwaukee correspondent warns that the gila monster is dangerous despite scientist claims. He cites its habit of feeding on lizards and insects and lying on hot sand, suggesting venom and putrefaction in bites. In Richmond Virginia Judge Ingram decides in Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance vs Drinker et al that Mrs. Willie A Drinker, widow of Joseph E Drinker, receives all $6000 policy proceeds minus four premiums paid by the assignees City Sergeant J C Smith and H Kelly. The contract is deemed a wagering agreement under public policy and the assignees are repaid their advances with interest, while the widow gains the rest.
Mount Elliott Springs Company manager S Fred Cummings denies reports of a race riot at Mount Elliott. He attributes calm relations between his crew and local mountaineers and accuses sensationalism of goading conflict.
Richmond special report on the arrest and conviction of Alice Scruggs a colored woman who ran a crime school hiring imported young women as servants with forged recommendations to steal valuables from households. She is jailed on three larceny charges and Julia Burwell received eighteen months. Detectives pursue other gang members.
In Cherry Grove seven miles north of Harrisonburg a buggy runaway seriously injures Mrs Howard Taylor and Miss Lizzie Thomas. Mrs Taylor suffers skull fracture, collarbone and arm injuries, internal damage. Miss Thomas bears a broken arm and severe bruises to body and face after being thrown from the buggy when the horse bolted.
Elaborate preparations by the Jamestown Exposition Company mark Prince Wilhelm of Sweden's Hampton Roads arrival on the cruiser Fyleia August 19. Navy units will participate in a three day reception before a visit to President Roosevelt, then to New York Providence and Newport Rhode Island. Swedes in New York will host 600 Linsburg College students from Kansas. Isaane Bosserman found dead near Swoopes Depot along the C and O track. age 55, survived by wife and several children.
Richmond special report: Harry Allen and Lewis Rogers, baggage thieves, pleaded guilty and sentenced to five years in the state penitentiary. Edith Allen remains in the city jail likely to be released soon due to ill health, believed to have prompted the men to confess to spare her.
Jesse Walker, wanted for shooting Emma Forrest near Danville, surrendered to police but refused to speak about the affair. Emma was found wounded in the woods, shot with a Winchester rifle after a confrontation said to involve her cursing Walker.
A plan proposes diverting about 5000 dollars remaining after Confederate reunion debts to raise a monument in Richmond for General Fitzhugh Lee. The idea has gained favor with old soldiers and several past contributors to the reunion fund would share in any leftover proceeds if unused.
In Winchester at Stephen City Mrs Blanche E Grover and Henry H Coffman wed at the bride's home with Rev FF A Stanton officiating. In Richmond Miss Emily Savare Crump and Frank Irving Starke married at St John s Episcopal Church. In Fredericksburg William T Bland and Clara B Thacker wed at Spottsylvania Court House residence with Rev J H W Crismond officiating. In Roanoke Hugh Haley married Annie Griffin at St Andrew s Catholic Church with Rev Father J W Lynch presiding.
Lynchburg special reports that Robert Cooper of Amherst County was killed and William A. Lawthorne of Lynchburg was seriously wounded by two African American men on a moving freight train bound for Lynchburg. An argument arose on the car, the assailants fired, then fled the scene.
Richmond faces possible control by a large bread trust backed by about 4 million dollars. A New York led group plans to establish a branch in Richmond and has approached the American Bread and Baking Company, which has only recently begun operations here.
Richard Jones, husband of famed soprano Black Patti, was shot in Portsmouth by two Black men during a robbery attempt. A bullet entered below the left shoulder and passed through the chest, leaving his condition uncertain.
George W. Altaffer, a well known local contractor, was paralyzed from the neck down after a fall. Doctors fear the injury may prove fatal.
In Henrico County Magistrate Court the penalty for publicly hugging a girl against her will was set at 10 dollars. The case involved Miss Laura Watkins daughter of John Watkins who lives on the Seventh Electric Railway. P Sr Nuckols a resident of Glen Rhee Heights acted as a post on a car with Miss.
Investigation into the Washington Chattanooga United wreck near Johnson City Tennessee shows operator W O Craig misread two orders and allowed a switch engine into the block. Six people were killed and nine injured with two later dying at the National Soldiers Home Hospital. Craig fled but returned to face responsibility.
Raymond Dupuy vice president and general manager of the Virginian Railway Company returns from New York where he conferred with Henry H Rogers about the railway. He denies rumors of a sale to a Philadelphia syndicate. Contracts for plant equipment including ten sixty ton steel conveyor cars and a power plier at Swells Point Norfolk Harbor have been let and coal is expected to run by May 1908.
In Richmond, about 500 soda water proprietors and clerks were arraigned in Police Court for Sabbath labor. Each faced a $2 fine and paid without protest. Justice Crutchfield stated arrests would continue until all Sundays open soda fountains in the city are shut down.
Fredericksburg reports Col. John St Alrich a Spottsylvania leader who died suddenly while directing farm work. Other obituaries include Mrs Harriet Anne Allen of Stafford County and Mrs J W Davis of Orange County. Rev James H Marshall of Caroline County dies after lingering illness. Col James M Neal of Danville dies after heart trouble. In Winchester Mrs Louis Knapp Mullikin Whittemore, daughter of Col George Knapp and mother of Charles Mullikin, dies in St Louis. George E Bowden of Richmond dies of paralysis. J L Price of Roanoke dies after two months of typhoid pneumonia. James Smith of near Nary, Suffolk, dies at seventy five.
