Margaret Brown aged thirteen reports how ants enter and exit a hole in a field. The narrator observes teamwork as ants pull a blade of grass from the hole, with one ant eventually succeeding alone by using both his hind and fore legs to haul the second blade out.
A brief cartoonish dialogue shows Mrs Cobwigger questioning Freddie about his ice cream. Freddie persists, saying he does not feel sick yet. The snippet sits within Life magazine style captions and hints at playful domestic judgment.
Police Commissioner Oscellor Shiell and his convalescent wife were assaulted in Portsouth after he reproved two tipsy men for insulting a lady. The men, Robert Radcliff and Thomas Dowdy, returned, beat the commissioner, dragged him outside, and struck his wife with an iron pipe. A crowd pursued the assailants and they were captured.
Richmond special report: Judge Ed Waddill Jr. orders Virginia Passenger and Power receivers to enforce race separation on street cars with new rules. No smoking except on platforms. open and closed cars affected. Conductors must warn passengers before any arrest for noncompliance. rules take effect this week amid rising arrests.
A severe electrical storm struck near Holland killing Mary Scott and her mother, wife of John Scott, both colored, when lightning struck their house. The infant in Mary’s lap survived unhurt. Liverman and Johnson store at Copeland was struck, salesman Thomas Pierce stunned. a Suffolk dwelling was hit with torn weather boards but no injuries. Brakeman Joseph Cook of the Norfolk and Southern Railway suffered serious facial burns.
An eastbound coal train and a westbound freight collided in the center of the Norfolk and Western tunnel near Lynchburg. The front engines and two cars were wrecked, track blocked nine hours. Fireman Frank Kirkwood of Elliston was injured and had a foot amputated at a hospital.
Richmond Louise and Grace Kahn, aged eleven and three, daughters of J Kahn of Armour Packing Company, were severely injured when a railway torpedo exploded after a boy gave it to them and told them to strike it with a rock. The elder girl held the device between her knees and pounded it with a stone. the blast caused serious injuries but was not fatal. The boy fled. his name is unknown.
A Roanoke special reports that Alexander Richardson, a young farmer of unstable mind, and his father James Richardson were killed near Galax, Pulaski County. While being escorted home, Alexander broke away and ran in front of a freight train, being ground to pieces. James Richardson died of injuries two hours later while trying to save his son.
Winchester special dispatches indicate Assemblyman Richard E Bird of Winchester and Frederick County is expected to be elected Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates following the retirement of Speaker Carndell. The reports state Bird has strong statewide support.
Jamestown report notes Director General Barr expands power at the Exposition appointing Dixon as electricity chief and Wakefield to run concessions and admissions. Davidson resigns, passes restricted, and Bolles leads a broad advertising push. The Warpath site becomes an amusement park with nightly acts and a loop the loop planned for early August.
Richmond special report describes Edward Davis and Roy Seals escaping from the state farm after overpowering guards. Davis was killed by pursuing officers near Pendleton, while Seals remains at large, pursued by bloodhounds and deputies. The fugitives robbed travelers, seized weapons, and threatened violence as they attempted to reach freedom.
Seven beri-beri cases have developed in the past week on ships of the Brazilian squadron tied up in the harbor. Patients were taken to Portsmouth Hospital with two reported in critical condition. Local physicians monitor the spread.
A young woman identified as Fanette Wilcox also known as Helen Miller tried to commit suicide by swallowing bichloride of mercury on the street. Her cries drew bystanders, she was rushed to a physician and, after persistent care, her life was saved.
Elbert Tatterson of Norfolk, contractor for a $225,000 Rockefeller funded Naval Y M C A project, filed for voluntary bankruptcy with assets $245,371 against liabilities of $200,513. He has wide Norfolk and out-of-town work, including Gibbs plant in Baltimore and a Stone Printing plant in Roanoke, yet the Rockefeller Y M C A contract may be affected.
Fredericksburg special reports a Seaboard Air Line passenger train derailed near the Rappahannock River bridge. Engineer Richard O'Brien suffered severe injuries pinning under the engine, with his foot crushed and burns noted. fireman John Wargrove was lightly hurt. The engineer O'Brien was taken to Mary Washington Hospital as track remained blocked for hours.
The state corporation commission issued a charter to the Bridgewater Development Company of Bridgewater in this county. Capital is $50,000 and set to develop coal and off lands near Bridgewater. Work will begin about August first. All stockholders are prominent Bridgewater businessmen.
Fred H. Blake, operator of employment agencies at Richmond and Pine Beach, was arrested on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. Eleven warrants were issued against him as complainants allege he took money by promising employment that never came.
