A letter extols the Nome Paper as essential in every home. It argues the home paper awakens interest by presenting familiar people and places, fostering a lifelong reading habit and intelligent citizens. It contrasts with foreign papers that omit local references, which may fail to engage children.
In Mexico every vehicle must carry a light at night and enforcement is strict. Burro and mule carts also require a candle. Drivers wrap a dip candle in newspaper to shield it from wind and hold it in their left hand while returning home after work.
James M Barr, newly elected director general of the Jamestown Exposition Company, met Secretary Cortelyou to review expo plans. Cortelyou expressed satisfaction and pledged full support. Barr reports exhibit buildings complete and 91 percent of exhibits installed. Government and state buildings are finished and the Warpath is operating.
August 1 designated German Day at the Jamestown Exposition. The German American Alliance based in Philadelphia issued a proclamation inviting German Americans nationwide to mark the 132d anniversary of the German Americans Declaration of Independence. The day features a concert by German singing societies.
In Lynchburg special court, witnesses testified in the case of William E. Rakes Grover Beamer Geo Martin Geo Boothe and T E Rakes all of Patrick County charged with the murder of Miss Ann Hall and wounding her sister Jane The defendants sought bail until their September trial The evidence linked them to the alleged plan to remove W W Hall who they suspected of informing on moonshining They fired into his aunts home injuring Hall Judge McDowell denied bail and the prisoners were returned to jail.
In Hastings Court Judge J M Mullen ruled A Levy cannot be registered as a voter until he files in English handwriting. Levy offered to write in Hebrew but the law requires English. The ruling upheld the registrar S P Gentry's decision.
A proposal seeks city authorization for a steel viaduct linking the east and west city ends from Pretty to Twenty second Street. The project is estimated between 350000 and 400000 dollars and streetcars would be required to use the viaduct and pay for the privilege.
Lynchburg special report Harry Carson a Bell Telephone lineman died in a hospital after a 25 foot fall from a pole when his foot touched an arc lamp wire. He was 46, a native of Montclair New Jersey and a widower.
Warrenton sees Miss Lucy Johnson Pattis wed William R. Hickman as Rev Keene of Salem Methodist Church officiates. Florence Ide weds C B Henreitzie at her sister’s home. Ide is late Prof Ide’s daughter from Staunton, lawyer groom from Welch West Virginia. Natal ie Hogsett marries Frank Lee Zirkle of Washington DC with only Miss Dudley as attendant. ceremony by Rev Fraser in Richmond First Presbyterian. Mollie J. weds Samuel Bg nasi M Melvedon Sedene in a synagogue on Eleventh Street.
Mrs Emma Stoller and Mrs Laura Lineberg, wives of local farmers, fought on a public road two miles from Winchester last Saturday evening. Their husbands held the horses as the women exchanged a 30 minute brutal fist fight ending in both women badly cut and bruised amid years of bad blood.
In Richmond a special joint committee of the city council on charter changes adopted a resolution to appoint a three member subcommittee to work with the city attorney. The panel will draft amendments to the charter to create a board of control with full executive powers and to limit council action to legislative matters. The subcommittee will also assess whether to reduce the number of councilmen.
Richmond special report notes tax policy as a campaign focus. Candidate E C Folkes argues the Auditor of Public Accounts shows Virginia corporations underpay taxes, tying this to road funding. Folkes highlights Adams Express Company dispute in city tax debates as context for his argument on needed revenue.
In Branchville Southampton County, sixteen year old Pittman was fatally stabbed by Moody Coggins twenty two after a dispute over small charges. Coggins fled to North Carolina then surrendered claiming self defense. Held for grand jury with bail set at one thousand dollars.
Danville special report states Joe P. Davis alias Charlie Thomas, long employed by Southern Railway, is in jail awaiting trial for deserting the United States Army in New Jersey and forging the name of Miss Nannie Blanks to a certificate of deposit for 225 at the First National Bank of Danville.
Charles Mc Kinney, sought in Big Stone Gap for stealing a gold watch and money from a coal company office, was captured in Western North Carolina and brought back to Big Stone Gap. He had been jailed in Knoxville, Tenn., but escaped earlier.
At the Roanoke common council meeting a resolution was adopted to appoint two members from each body to investigate a government by commission with the aim of applying that form to Roanoke.
Richmond's population is estimated at 110000 according to Census Taker Johnson. The figure, though not as large as expected, reflects the city’s size and growth.
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad agrees to observe the state commission order enforcing a 3 cent passenger rate. The current charge is 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 cents per mile as observed in Richmond.

C E Sydnor received the citys largest Albemarle pippins order from London for 20 000 barrels of A No 1 pippins at 6 500 per barrel free on board to total about 120 000. He also got a 5 000 barrel order from Copenhagen, marking the first shipment to Denmark by his house.
The body of Isaac Rotham aged about twenty was recovered after he drowned while bathing alone at Ocean View. Rotham represented a firm selling souvenirs at the Jamestown Exposition.
Special from Suffolk reports Capt. Henry of the Seaboard Air Line shot a negro named Rix with a shotgun during a money quarrel. Injuries are serious. outcome unknown. Incident arose from a money transaction dispute.
Special report from Lynchburg: John C. Leibrick aged fourteen died in a local hospital due to a stone bruise on his foot. The injury required amputation of the leg, with fatal consequences.
Staunton special dispatch reports the Adams Express Company has ordered all agents to refuse to ship cash on delivery packages containing intoxicating liquors, signaling a strict policy across its network.
