Massillon Dentist May Inherit $50,000 Windfall

News from Massillon reports Dr. Frederick Scadding could receive a sixth of a $300,000 Canadian estate after the death of his uncle. Scadding, who left Massillon last Saturday, is expected to return in two weeks to learn if the fortune will be his. He had lived in Canada for years before joining Dr. L. E. Menuez in Massillon about two years ago.

Brief Canton Visit By President McKinley Ends At Six

President and Mrs. McKinley made a brief Canton call from noon to 6 p m before heading to New York. He will visit Montauk Point Saturday to inspect troops and hospitals. Also notes illness of T Harvey Smith and several probate and real estate actions in Canton area including marriage licenses.

Returned Montauk recruits say Colonel Hard punished troops by forcing bareheaded sun exposure for hours in extreme heat. One boy recalls Toban being left in a shade-less enclosure for six hours at 130 degrees. Other witnesses claim Hard kicked soldiers in New York.

Marshal Markel Offers Reward for Lincoln Liquor Sale Clue

Marshal Markel declared he will pay 85 to anyone who proves a Massillon saloonkeeper recently sold liquor to Abe Lincoln. He condemned the sale of liquor to the "poor fellow" and vowed penalties if evidence is secured. Lincoln was last seen intoxicated on Tuesday.

State Hospital Patients to Arrive at Massillon Next Week

The first patients for the new state hospital at Massillon will arrive next Tuesday from Toledo, followed by Thursday arrivals from Cleveland. Those from Columbus will be transferred on September 13. The building has been ready a week, with attendants and assistants arriving. The board of trustees named William G. Cappeller of Mansfield as store keeper.

President McKinley Visits Camp Wikoff at Montauk Point

At Camp Wikoff President McKinley Secretary Alger and a procession including Vice President Hobart Colonel Herrick Webb C Hayes and others toured the camp. Eighteen hospital deaths were reported, 1276 sick at the general hospital and 250 at the detention hospital.

Spain seeks release of Spanish soldiers held in U S

Washington reports the Spanish government seeks release of remaining Spanish soldiers captived in the United States after the Cervera fleet destruction. A few are at Fort McPherson. The U S government agreed to release sailors if Spain transports them home, and the same treatment is being considered for soldiers.
