Twenty cases of diphtheria reported in Massillon with health officials hopeful for removal of quarantines as recovered patients dilute the list. Public health rules from the Ohio state board of health urge strict school and public gathering restrictions, reporting duties, and disinfection to curb spread.
State hospital patients enjoyed a Thursday night ball in the new dining room. The first event of its kind, dances will be held weekly. Few visitors attended due to lack of public knowledge. Patients who can leave their rooms danced with attendants while enjoying the diversion. Music was provided by Prof Puegner, Harold Howard, and William Ertle of the Military band orchestra.
Deputy Postmaster William F Brown finds burglars in his South Street home upon return at 8 PM A razor is found in the captured suspect James Campbell from Providence with companion Frank Davis The mayor sets bond at 1000. Brown reports valuables mostly safe though some items bonded into bundles.
At 1 o clock this morning, Orrville firemen could not assist outside city limits as a dining hall and nearby structures owned by the Ohio Central Fair Association burned completely. Estimated loss about 1500 dollars with partial insurance. A gasoline can found nearby suggests an incendiary plan and explosive spread.
Canton notes a three year sentence for burglary. Local verdict in Spuhler and Weiler vs McCauley’s administrator awards $179.49 to plaintiffs. Upcoming assignments include Canton Massillon Electric Railway v Travelers Insurance. Divorce pleas filed, burglar Gardner sent to penitentiary, estates in Massillon Canton and Bethlehem township, marriage licenses issued for Canton Beach City New Berlin and North Lawrence.
Miss Anna Strobel and Charles Burd wed Thursday evening at the bride’s parents’ Jarvis avenue home with fifty relatives. Private Edward Strobel was ill and absent. The Rev J F Clokey officiated as Lohengrin played. Guests included Miss Marie Stone of Coin Pa and Mrs Blanche McCreary of Indianapolis. The couple will reside on South Erie street.
North Lawrence October 26. A Democratic rally failed with speakers Peter J. Collins and Milton J. Braucher. Sherwood could not attend. Braucher substituted. Rent issues kept the hall from being used and no sentiments were expressed. The Minglewood band heads to Canal Fulton for a Republican rally with Congressman Tayler slated to speak.
Mrs. Charles G. Oliver of Canton, widow of a former Massillon wallpaper dealer, entered her new Oliver House Friday to find no water flowing. She started to the water company, left faucets open, and returned hours later to a flooded residence with several hundred dollars in damaged carpets.
Health authorities report a diphtheria spike with twenty two cases citywide, three deaths, and continued cooperation between the Board of Education and Board of Health. Sanitary Policeman Elsass enforces orders while Health Officer Miller pushes daily measures. most cases remain in the North End, scarce south of Main street. Eight Charity Rated School children were ill and nearly all have recovered or are convalescing.
Last night the board decided to fumigate all schoolrooms where diphtheria cases studied. School in those departments will be dismissed while fumigation proceeds. The board also paid bills and teachers and janitors salaries.
Clerk E W Busby health officer reports no known diphtheria cases in Perry township beyond Massillon. He pledges quick action and standard precautions the moment any case is confirmed to prevent spread.
Charles W Giltz, three year old son of Mr and Mrs Reinhart Giltz, of 106 High Street, died shortly before 1 o clock Saturday morning from diphtheria. Funeral services are set for this afternoon and will be held on the lawn in front of the residence. The mother and two other family members are ill with diphtheria.
One new diphtheria case was reported yesterday. Health Officer Joseph Ford quarantined the house but no additional control actions were taken. Citizens fear Massillon travel could worsen the outbreak while Lawrence township reports no new cases and most patients are recovering under Health Officer Charles Kirk.
Trustee Eggert of Tuscarawas township said Massillon saw cases of typhoid fever but no diphtheria. He noted the trustees, serving as the board of health, will act to prevent the disease and keep it under control if needed.
Snyder & Lentz on Charles street sold at auction today for 800 dollars the plant appraised at 4,000 with Charles Snyder of the firm as buyer. Hundreds of pliers, normally retailing at 1 dollar, went for 45 cents or less. George Frantz bought 400 at a price from 4 to 84. Tiadozen, while Frank A. Vogt acted as receiver for the firm.
