John Matthews Dead Likely Drowned Near Stark Siding
John Matthews of Matthews Bros grocers on West Tremont Street was found dead Thursday afternoon near Stark Siding on the Fort Wayne railroad east of Canton. He lay partly submerged in a creek. an umbrella nearby and a maimed left hand helped identify him. Relatives were notified, and authorities considered intoxication and a fall from a trestle as possible causes. He had been drinking heavily recently, had been missing since Friday, and left a $3 slip from the store drawer. Matthews was a loved husband and father, and his death shrouded his wife and daughter in grief.
