Ohio voters deliver a large Republican plurality, with returns showing 16 Republicans and 4 Democrats in the state delegation, while the Twelfth district remains in doubt. The latest tallies affirm the party’s strong statewide support, though Congress seats flip only with the Twelfth possibly shifting to Democrats.
Philadelphia voters set a state record with over one million ballots as Samuel W. Pennypacker won the governorship by an estimated 75,000 votes. Republicans gained in counties while Democrats captured two or three of 32 congress seats. The legislature is seen as strongly Republican and Boies Penrose is expected to return to the U.S. Senate. Judges were elected in several counties, including Edwin H. Stowe in Allegheny and James L. Galbraith in Butler.
A series of bombs and fireworks exploded at Madison Square during an airship spectacle and election returns, killing eleven and injuring at least fifty as panicked crowds trampled. Police arrested nine fireworks handlers as ambulances rushed the wounded to hospitals amid a citywide emergency response.
Trenton November 5 Republicans win decisive majorities in both houses of the New Jersey legislature securing party control for another term.
Reports from Dallas Jacksonville Richmond Charleston Georgetown Mississippi indicate Democrats sweep federal, state, and local tickets with light voting. No opposition to most Democratic candidates. Mississippi page notes low turnout and possible defeat for constitutional amendments. Rhea in Virginia district 9 appears elected.
Early returns show the Republican lead shrinking from a 20 vote majority to about 16 in the Senate with 107 seats counted and several southern districts still unresolved. Democrats gain in Pennsylvania Nebraska Delaware Wisconsin Maryland Colorado New York and North Carolina. Republicans hold or gain in Indiana New Hampshire North Dakota South Dakota California Michigan Kansas Washington Idaho Utah and more, leaving the final balance uncertain as results roll in.
Early returns from Massachusetts show Bates Republican ahead of Gaston with about a 35 thousand plurality as most cities and towns report totals. In Colorado, Peabody is seen winning the governorship by a small margin while Democratic congressional candidates run ahead of their ticket.
At 10 30 p m last night returns were coming in slowly from Brattle Washington indicating the state would go Republican by about 26000 votes. The result likely brings three congressmen elected and control of the legislature.
New York returns show Republican Benjamin B Odell elected governor by 6 000 to 9 000 over local favorite Caler. City and state results indicate GOP strength with Odell sweeping upstate districts while Kings County and Greater New York favored Democrats for other offices.
President Roosevelt and Mrs. Roosevelt voted in Nassau County Fifth District near Oyster Bay with a large cheering crowd. He said he had performed his duty and would await full returns, then left in a horse drawn trap amid greetings. In Michigan, Republicans sweep state offices and Congress, with Alfred Lucking losing his seat and General Alger likely to win the U S Senate vacancy.
Wisconsin votes GOP by at least 35 000 with La Follette winning governor and the state ticket. Republicans to control next legislature and potentially US senator Spooner’s seat. Connecticut concedes entire Republican ticket and a Republican general assembly. Utah and Idaho returns hint at Republican leads with scattered results and scratching.
Kansas returns a Republican landslide with at least a 40000 vote majority. The entire state ticket and all congressmen are Republicans. Republicans gain about a hundred seats in the legislature.
In St Louis on election day arrests were made for repeating. Two Republican election judges were arrested for carrying concealed weapons. Over 50 voters reported being denied ballots as Circuit Attorney Folk reviewed complaints and evidence of fraud for the grand jury.
