The Central Union Bell Telephone Company plans to extend its metallic toll lines to villages around Massillon including Justus Beach City Wilmot Pigeon Run West Lebanon Clinton and Manchester. Manager Stalcup said crews would arrive soon and work would be pushed quickly with new switchboard sections and a special operator to serve the extended area.
The American line steamer Paris arrived in port after a stormy voyage north of the usual track with lights out at night. She carried sixteen cases of war munitions and miscellaneous cargo and will be discharged and handed to naval authorities. crew totals two hundred eighty nine. The ship will be renamed Yale.
The Port Cabanas batteries, thirty five miles west of Havana, were bombarded by the flagship New York and the torpedo boat Porter. The Porter withdrew, the New York opened fire, a six inch shell struck the battery, Spaniards answered, and six heavy shells demolished the position before nightfall. The ships then returned to Havana to resume blockade duties.
Five thousand residents flee Santiago de Cuba as Spanish command orders enlistment for men aged fifteen to fifty. Blockade looms with threats of massacre, food stores seized, and civilians scramble to hide provisions amid growing fear and starvation risks.
On April 30, the Ninth cavalry and the Twenty-fourth Infantry left by special trains for Tampa. No further troop movements will occur for several days. General Brooke has allowed parts of the command to join parades in Chattanooga next week, signaling a longer stay, with movements kept highly secret.
Kingston Jamaica April 30 The British consul in Santiago de Cuba cabled for a warship to protect British interests. Cruiser Pallas now at Port Antonio likely to be ordered there. Kary West April 30 The dispatch boat Dolphin captured the Spanish schooner Lolje off Havana harbor.
York April 30 The Sun Washington correspondent reports the Spanish fleet sailed from St Vincent Cape Verde. The navy plans for an emergency include fast US cruisers patrolling the seas and racing to port on sighting the squadron. Admiral Sampson will concentrate his six armor-clads to respond rapidly along the Atlantic coast.
The President received numerous visitors and many recommended army appointments. He refused promises but said recommendations would go to the secretary of war. Some indications suggested personal friends might receive favorable consideration. He noted the Paris arrival and pleased by London press tone.
A steamer arriving from Manila failed to sight the Asiatic squadron's vessels near the coast. The captain said entry to Manila harbor would require powerful battleships and a strong land force to assist the fleet.
The gunboat Bancroft, after thorough overhaul at Charleston navy yard, leaves with full armament and provisions for Norwalk. It is likely to join the blockade squadron at Havana, as reported by Associated Press from Boston on April 30.
From Madrid comes word that a Spanish gunboat again engaged an American torpedo boat off the harbor of Cartagena. The incident was officially announced, details remain sparse, and no injuries or casualties are stated in the dispatch.
Paris reports United States Minister Woodford received a cablegram ordering his return at the earliest moment. He will sail today on the La Touraine from Havre. The piece notes health concerns and endorses Burdock Blood Bitters as a remedy.
No plans given out. The Navy Department refuses to affirm or deny reports of the flying squadron movements. Supposed to serve as scouts to shadow the coming Spanish fleet to Porto Rico. The small fishing craft seized by the dispatch boat Dolphin voluntarily surrendered off Key West on April 30. The owner, bound for Havana, asked to be captured so as not to fall into Spanish hands, after being warned away by the Dolphin's commander.
Albany April 30 Governor Black has commissioned Fred D Grant as colonel of the Fourteenth Regiment New York Infantry. The announcement comes from the Associated Press and confirms a leadership appointment in the state militia.
East Greenville April 30. John Green colored attacked John Turner white with a razor wounding him ten inches long in the abdomen. Turner’s condition feared fatal. Green fled on foot, Constable Henry Rohr pursues, trail lost near Stanwood. Green came from Illinois. Turner a mine laborer formerly of Pike Run. Public excitement runs high as search continues.
The U S Comptroller of the Currency received a telegram from Bank Examiner Ewer reporting he has taken charge of Hampshire National Bank in Northampton Massachusetts. The president is missing believed to owe at least 75000 dollars. The bank had a capital of 250000 dollars, deposits of 250000 dollars and a surplus of 350000 dollars. Also reported: Maysville Alms House in Kentucky burned with Annie Ford an elderly inmate dying in the blaze and the matron nearly suffocating during the attempt to save her.
