Washington June 18 Senate education and labor committee heard witnesses supporting the pending eight hour bill. Evidence included cases of workers being discharged from plants with government contracts over labor matter concerns.
President John Swain of Indiana University has signified acceptance of Swarthmore College presidency effective next September. He requires $400,000 to enlarge the college and expand the curriculum, a fund already subscribed with potential for further increases, per a Times Philadelphia special.
The Mount Aloysius academy in Cresson Pennsylvania opened a new Alumnae hall gifted by C M Schwab and accepted for the faculty by Rev M Smith. Gov Stone and Judge O Conner spoke, inaugurating a combined hall opening and commencement with graduates Lynch Black Cosgrave Graham Hoeveler and others.

In Oklahoma City a land claim dispute ends with W T McMichael killing W E Johnson on the street. Johnson fires back wounding McMichael. Johnson dies minutes later. E E Brown, editor of The Times Journal, was present and fired without effect. Brown had warned McMichael to stop threatening them. Spain treaty with United States delayed. Madrid reports the pact of friendship will not be concluded before autumn as Bellamy returns.
Washington June 18 interest centers on a Republican senators conference on Cuban reciprocity. Beet sugar interests warned against new obligations while supporters push for the Spooner bill. A treaty with Cuba may be sent to the Senate, but many doubt action this session as prospects dim.

Mounted and heavily armed crowds spread, with many leaving soon after for claims while signs of trouble appeared. In Bloomington Indiana Dr Willam Lowe Bryan was elected president of Indiana State University succeeding Joseph Swain who moves to Swarthmore College.
In Milwaukee on June 18 Henry Smith Pritchett of Boston was selected to succeed Charles Kendall Adams as president of the University of Wisconsin.
In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania the large Lace Manufacturing Company shuts down due to a dispute over discharging five girls with relatives in mines. About twelve hundred workers idle as lace makers cotton workers and miners align with the strike, fearing unfair labor practices and looming plant evictions amid arsenic coal field tensions. Increased union action and potential entry of nonunion miners are discussed, with certificates required for new miners and relief efforts underway in several sectors.
June 18 Columbus The Willis tax law case involving the Southern Guam Company and Canton incorporations was argued in the Ohio Supreme Court.
