An observer recounts two consecutive auction sales in the New York Wholesale Dry Goods Centre, noting vast sums of goods sold in hours and highlighting exceptional silks. The piece praises black Brocade Taffetas twenty three and a half inches wide at 50 cents, and five lots of choice silks as unprecedented value.
Advertises silks at 50c a yard and 25c plain black habitai silks with mail samples. Promotes summer homes in Wisconsin Michigan Minnesota Iowa and Dakota near lakes. Highlights accessible railroad routes via Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul. Offers free descriptions of resorts and rates from Wm Kelly Jr., Buffalo. Also claims Hood's Sarsaparilla can cure tiredness by enriching blood.
In St Louis on June 16, National Chairman Carter opened the Republican convention. Temporary chairman C W Fairbanks delivered the opening address as fervor ran high and unity appeared despite rival candidates. The key battle centers on the financial plank with fierce debate over gold standard vs free coinage and silver.
The money plank endorsed by Senator Allison and middle west states has been accepted by the east and will be adopted by the convention. It calls for gold silver and paper money in parity and passage of laws to achieve this, supports silver as international money, and opposes a unilateral 16 to 1 silver coinage. The convention will endorse silver under certain international or league of nations arrangements. Sacramento notes Buckley opponents control the convention and will declare for silver.
St Louis June 17 and the Republican National Convention reassembled with McKinley sure of the first place. Governor Morton of New York indicated willingness to accept the vice presidency if unanimity formed, signaling a McKinley Morton ticket and a gold standard platform. The credentials and resolutions committees stirred in fierce debate as factions press toward adjournment tomorrow.
The national convention, adjourned yesterday, reconvened at 1 o'clock with Temporary Chairman Fairbanks presiding. Senator M Thurston of Nebraska was named permanent chairman and began his address. Officers were elected as recommended: Charles W. Johnson secretary. W J Raley, Harry Schmidt assistant secretaries. ALM Humphret tally clerk. W Monroe clerk. James Burke official stenographer. T E Byrnes sergeant at arms. assistants Hinkley, Johnson, Rexford, Stone. The reading clerks named Stone, Wilson, Molloy, Hatcher, Bean. The convention adopted the committee’s recommendation and the opening prayer was by Fairbanks with Rev Dr Samuel Sale. Mr William Lamb of Virginia proposed governing rules until permanent organization.
The committee on permanent organization met at the Southern hotel with General Grosvenor of Ohio chosen as chairman without dissent. Delegate Trummell of Nebraska moved to select Senator John M. Thurston as permanent chairman and the motion carried unanimously. The temporary secretary and staff were made permanent. Ohio member of the committee is H. Grosvenor, with Charles H. Mullen of West Virginia, Henry Schmulbach of Maryland, and W. J. Smale.
The Rules and Order of Business Committee met in St Louis on June 17 after adjournment. Congressman Bingham of Philadelphia was elected chairman. The panel approved six votes for each territory and two for the District of Columbia, per the national convention call. Governing rules will be those of the Fifty fourth Congress. The convention’s order of business begins with credentials report, then permanent organization, then other items.
The report outlines resolutions on the national committee voting process with named nominees George W. Wilson of Pennsylvania H. H. Bingham of West Virginia J. L. Hunt of Maryland and W. D. Straight for the positions of president and vice president with ballot and balloting procedures noted.
President Cleveland replies to the New York Herald denying any fixed delegate figures and opposing free silver. He warns that adopting silver would advantage opponents, harm party unity, and urges sound money Democrats to stay active to avert demoralization. He affirms loyalty to true democracy and the country’s good.
