Port Royal Pennsylvania tragedy follows a Pittsburg Coal Co explosion. Superintendent William McCune led 17 volunteers into the mine to recover bodies despite danger. 13 dead, seven injured, and families await word as rescue efforts face deadly gas and collapsing passages. Names of the fallen span supervisors, foremen, and workers from No 2 No 3 and No 4 mines, with many survivors left behind.
Mine Inspector Bernard Callahan and seven men descended the shaft for an investigative tour when an explosion followed after they signaled to lower the cage. Bodies of Tyler Consaulus and McCune were found but others remained trapped until a second party recovered them.
In Pittsburg on June 12 Walter Dorman testified in the Kahney murder trial about the break in to the Kahney residence to commit robbery and the ensuing shooting. He described joining the Biddle brothers at 10 15 pm, entering via a shutter, and observing Jack Biddle aiming a revolver as a gun went off. The trio fled, then traveled to a school house and reached home by 7 am.
Montreal July 12 Grand President Wilson of the Brotherhood of Railway Trackmen of America sent an ultimatum to Canadian Pacific president Shaughnessy demanding wage increases and a conference by noon Tuesday. In Portland Maine the track and fuel men on all lines of Maine Central have begun a statewide strike with members handing keys to station agents as part of a broader effort for official recognition, aligned with the Canadian Pacific action.
In Philadelphia June 12 the Chamber Wylie Presbyterian church voted to extend a call to Rev. Dr. Henry C. Minton of San Jose California moderator of the recent Presbyterian general assembly. Minton will be informed immediately. The pulpit at Chamber Wylie is noted as one of Philadelphia's leading posts. Former occupant Rev. Thomas A. Hoyt resigned last week.

Charley F Jones once valet secretary to the late William Marsh Rice is reported dying at a private sanitarium in New York. Mrs Dickinson says he takes no solid nourishment and has not left his room for four weeks. The district attorney denies he is dying but confirms serious illness.
Paris reports from Rome state the pope's illness is not serious though his holiness is weak. Extreme heat has affected him and his physicians advise he remain in seclusion in his apartment during the summer.

In New York on June 12, custom house inspectors seized unset rubies worth 19,000 francs from a room in the Grand Union hotel occupied by two young Belgians. The jewels were brought to the U S by the passengers on the steamer Zeeland arriving May 27 from Antwerp. The rubies will be formally appraised today.
Secretary of War Root with Mrs Root Miss Root and Mr and Mrs Carleton Sprague visited Buffalos exposition. They toured the Indian congress and then made a special trip to the moon aboard the air ship Luna.
President McKinley issued a formal statement after cabinet deliberations making clear he will not seek a third term and would not accept a nomination if offered. He emphasized serving through his current term and protecting national policies from third term talk.
A Boston woman, Mrs Margaret Blondin, identified by sister as the woman found dead in Chelmsford woods over the weekend after her head was discovered yesterday. Blondin, a French Canadian mill worker, had married in February and has since vanished. She had been living with him in Boston and had gone to Canada before he disappeared. Reports say the couple had separated after she refused a Canada trip.
Newroy Pa June 12 By Associated Press the Port Royal mine disaster death toll reaches eighteen with Harry Beveridge among the dead. Rescue teams recovered five bodies. thirteen miners remain trapped as guards secure the shaft mouth awaiting further blasts and dangers.
Newport News specials report that about one thousand men will be laid off at Newport News shipbuilding delta due to the recent strike. The entire plant is expected to close by Saturday night as the shipbuilding plants decide to refuse machinists demands.
The Chicago Board of Trade filed suit in United States court to prohibit Odell Commission Company and the telegraph company from handling quotation sales on the exchange. The action aims to stop these activities and asserts authority over trade practices.
One hundred twenty machinists at Snow Steam Pump Works return to work after a work stoppage that began in May. Terms of the agreement are not disclosed.

In Philadelphia on June 12 directors of the Northern Central railroad, controlled by the Pennsylvania railroad, declare a 4 percent semi annual dividend, an increase of 1 percent from the same period last year. No other business was transacted.
Lieutenant Henryne Mitchell of the Forty first regiment has been arrested and will face a court martial on the charge of embezzling 8277 of public funds at Bavolur.

The United States training ship Aldaneport is on an extended European cruise with a crew of about two hundred men, many from Ohio, aboard.
