A meeting of gold standard Democrats in Curcaco, July 22, will consider issuing a call for a national convention. Ten states will be represented, including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota, with numerous senators and local leaders attending. Leaders claim assurances that every state will send delegates to the convention.

In St Louis Jerome Had Dock reports West Virginia delegates oppose fusion and Bryan, threatening to bolt if Bryan is endorsed or nominated. The Muskingum County Anti Saloon League case in Zanesville ends in dismissal for lack of evidence. In Columbus a bartender, David Gorman, is severely injured after being slashed in the throat. Frank McCullough is jailed as the assailant.
The national convention of Methodist Deaconesses opened at Aspury Park New Jersey on July 22 Addresses were delivered by Mrs D A Minard and Dr Horlburd of Washington Delaware.
New York bankers hold meetings to protect the treasury gold reserve and may turn at least half of their holdings to the sub treasurys disposal. National City Bank agrees to 2 million dollars for reserve replenishment as exchanges stay strong and exports rise. The Green Glass Bottle Blowers Convention adjourns after electing officers and outlining a 10 percent wage advance demand.
A party of excursionists is lost for two days in Sulphur Cave near Enellisa Indiana. Missing are Charles Strother of St Louis HE R Rose and sister Rose of St Louis Ed L Grace of Porter County F X Graves Francis Arnett Patrick Breen and George Murphy of Campbell County Ky. The hotel register lists other names and up to 20 locals may be with them. Well equipped searchers are scouring the cave and surrounding area for survivors.
In St Louis the Populist and Silver conventions opened with Butler and Newlands as temporary chairs. The Populists back Bryan, Sewall, and a single silver plank while three factions quarrel over rules and fusion plans. Debates hinge on electors and potential bolting, with Bryan opposed to a split ticket and Democrats urging unity.
Major McKinley announced he will remain in Canton with his wife during the campaign summer. He will visit a militia camp in Crewe Laxa, attend Mount Union College’s semi centennial exercises, and try to be in Cleveland for the New England dinner. Hahn oversees Chicago speakers bureau, and General Powell Clayton handles New York speakers work. Hanna will split time between New York and Chicago supervising campaign operations. Plus varied nominations in West Virginia and editorial stances on silver coinage, plus a railroad wreck near Murphyshoro injuring twelve.
A mutiny aboard the barkentine Herbert Fuller from Boston to Rosario ends in mass murder. The captain his wife and second mate killed. First mate Thomas Bram is suspected while color steward Charles Spencer notes suspicions and whisky. Cook Jonathan Sheere helped expose Bram who was placed in irons. Passengers including Lester Monks and Frank Monch detained as US consul seeks instructions.
George Swain a 45 year old farmer near Attica Drypenx Michigan killed his three small children then set fire to the house and blew out his brains. His wife had died recently and it is believed this drove him insane.
Crowds gathered around a replica log cabin in Monumental square as Cleveland marks the centennial with old time exhibits. Choctaw Tribe No 14 led the display in Indian costume while Rev Lathrop Cooley led a prayer and a quartet sang. Prominent figures from Cleveland and Connecticut attended events including Senator Hawley who will give the historical address.
In Cleveland on July 22, a clash between soldiers and strikers or sympathizers erupted as bricks and stones were thrown from concealment. A picket was knocked down and fired once. soldiers returned fire. Authorities warned arrests for yelling send at non union men or soldiers. Two strikers fled on a fast car, the motorman wounded by bayonet. Brown Hoisting and Conveying Co offered to rehire old workers via committees, but strikers rejected, demanding union recognition. The men pledged another proposal.
