New York July 16 Copies of the papal cyclical letter on The Most Holy Eucharist reached many Roman Catholic clergy. It defends the sacrament as Christ's real body and blood and condemns Gallicanist and Jansenist prejudices. The document calls for renewed frequent reception and urges priests to promote the eucharist with vigor and glory.

Harris was elected permanent president and J. J. Van Pelt secretary. Harris said about 60 percent of the port coal shippers are represented.
New York July 16 Prices of stocks rose early on Tuesday morning extending Monday's broad buying in grangers and pacifics. Strong demand suggested by new capital inflows. western selling did not deter gains. Missouri Pacific saw late strength but overall market slid, closing near its lows with only a few issues holding. Amalgamated Copper United States Steel and Chicago and Alton plus Toledo St. Louis and Western preferred showed late strength.
Harrisburg July 16. Colonel Henry G. Demming acting state geologist writes Mine Inspector Evans at Jolnstown suggesting the Pennsylvan ia uplift from recent Caribbean earthquakes and eruptions may have caused or contributed to the Rolling Mill mine catastrophe. He also appeals to Charles D. Wolcott of the US Geological Survey and notes new earth rifts and a seven foot May June uplift shown by the Harrisburg weather bureau mercurial barometer.
At 1 am two powder magazines detonated in Daly West silver mine 1200 foot level, killing seven by 4 am and injuring others. About 200 men were working between Daly West and Ontario mines, with three dead in Ontario. Relief parties searched amid ongoing fears for missing workers as 33 bodies had been recovered and 3 to 15 remained unaccounted for.
Washington July 16 The postmaster general orders that after October 1 1902 every rural free delivery user must erect a roadside mail box to approved specifications. Boxes may be stamped Approved by the Post master General and gain legal protection. The box must serve only one family except close relatives or same house. Carriers to refuse service to those who fail to comply. Officials are barred from selling rural free delivery kits Korea.
