A mob seized Fred Alexander after a jail transfer, dragged him to the courthouse yard, and burned him at a stake near the Pearl Forbes murder site. Thousands witnessed the lynching as Alexander denied guilt, insisting a wrong man was chosen. relics were later taken from the scene. Pearl Forbes’s father helped light the fire, while Miss Eva Roth had identified him earlier.
Havana report notes Governor Stanley instructs Warden Tomlinson to refuse Alexan der’s transfer to the sheriff unless he signs in writing to protect him. Neely case update says government ready to proceed with embezzlement trial. Neely indicted and to be held awaiting hearing before seven judges.

Washington January 16 progress in senate on the army reorganization bill with debates led by Missouri's Cockrell Georgia's Bacon and Colorado's Teller. The scene was chaotic as Quay loyalists packed the chamber, with many members and spectators crushed in. The final tally split regional support, while Quay anticipated Washington duties and a welcoming party for his seat.
Report notes representatives urged rapid passage of apportionment and ballot legislation during the Harrisburg session while present at the house, with a colonel easing a house vote and expectations of extended debate and influence on pending measures.
Harrisburg reports that 65 legislators who signed anti-Quay pledges at a Dec. 31 meeting allegedly switched on the first senate ballot to Mr. Quay. The statement branding the acts as perfidy cites several named signers and criticizes the party’s integrity. An absentee Bucks county member, Mr. Winner, says he would have supported Talzell if present.

Dr Andrew F McBride and Prof Rudolph S Witthaus testify that chloral hydrate caused death. Detectives recount Deaths confession and statements about McAllister placing drug in wine.
A special from Fenton Michigan reports the Baptist Ministers Aid society covering five states held its annual gathering at a local home. Attendance was strong among trustees. Elected officers include President W T L Doane of Cincinnati Vice President G F McFarren Bluffton Indiana and Secretary Rev C G W Maxson.
Washington Jan 106 The gavel presented by Col Mfe Caskey Twentieth Infantry at Port Santiago Manila was used to call the house to order. A senate resolution proposing $7 000 for inauguration expenses sparked debate over participation in ceremonies. The river and harbor bill faced brisk discussion as about twenty six pages were read and few amendments adopted. Western members pressed for arid lands reclamation but gained little traction.
In New York at the cathedral a conference of Roman Catholic priests chose three candidates to recommend to Rome as successors to the late Bishop Wigger of Newark. Several names were discussed, but the selections were not disclosed.
