Mrs. John Divans, thought dead after fever, revived in a coffin Friday afternoon as a friend viewed her face. Doctors gave restoratives, and by Saturday morning she wholly regained consciousness though weak. Mrs Evans, formerly Blanche Eidenour of Alliance, had been ill for weeks.
Icy base-work on the Harmarville bridge under construction by the American Bridge company caused a fatal fall. John Johnson, 27, of 6128 Butler Street, Lawrenceville, died five minutes after hospital arrival. Benjamin Smith, 27, of Reading, was seriously injured. Both men fell from the edge of the walk after a beam gave way and the structure swayed. They were rushed to Allegheny General Hospital, but Johnson did not regain consciousness.
Annapolis January 15 reports Arthur Pue Gorman elected United States Senator to succeed George L Wellington. Final totals show Gorman ahead in both the Senate and House votes. Vandiver reelected state treasurer in a joint session with a largely Democratic majority and two Republican cross votes for Vandiver.
Columbus Ohio January 145 Judge Evans granted a perpetual order restraining the city council from ousting John N Hinkle from the office of mayor The petition alleged a conspiracy among council members to impeach the mayor The judge held that removal of elective officers rests with the probate judge, not the council
Huntington W Va January 15 John B. K. Farr a prominent state politician was found guilty of manslaughter after a nine day murder trial over the death of Owen Ross Farr was convicted after lengthy proceedings in his murder case leaving the public in shock and awaiting further legal actions.
The Ohio Miners annual convention opened in Columbus with about 150 delegates. Officers reported the organization in flourishing condition as the major issue of the gathering centers on the acaj question.
Chicago January 15 A notice posted at the board of trade called for closing all open deals with George H Phillips the former Corn King Heavy margin calls followed causing a market drop and several rye contracts to be closed Outspoken statements from attorney Jacob Ringer and a brief reply from Phillips describe a $60 000 trouble with margins and forced closings amid rye and wheat declines
Washington January 15 Governor William Murray Crane of Massachusetts denied any chance of succeeding Secretary Long at the Navy Department. He stated there was absolutely nothing to the rumor, adding he came to Washington solely on personal business.
Wilkes Barre Pa Jan 15 Edward Williams fourteen was shot and seriously wounded at Plymouth yesterday by a guard at a house under smallpox quarantine. The guard fired at a cat escaping the house. If he recovers he will probably be blind for life.
