Columbus January 12 legislative battle over United States senate continues. Hanna leads with 73 votes yesterday and is likely to win, as both chambers prepare for a joint ballot today amid bribery charges and grand jury probes. Absence of Rep Cramer complicates implications for Hanna and McKisson.
On January 12 the House gathered for a senator vote as Representative Cramer of Paulding was absent ill, sought to attend, and later returned with support. A key motion to form a five member committee to probe bribery charges drew partisan lines, with few defections. Speaker Mason and several others joined Democrats in voting against suspending rules. The session closed amid renewed debate and lingering controversy over Marcus A. Hanna’s name.
Crowd fills the senate chamber in Cleveland as 11 o'clock balloting for US senator begins. Senator Sullivan nominates Hanna with strong voice while fusion delegates back Hanna. House vote and sick absence of Democrat Cramer leave Hanna at 73 needed votes. Republicans erupt in cheers, shouting Hanna’s name.
Senator Foudker comments on the first day of Ohio senatorial balloting saying Olio has spoken and the contest ended. He notes bitterness and hopes for party unity, doubts the outcome will change, and rejects protracted deadlock as deplorable. He mentions a call on the president and unspecified newspaper reports. Flon. Charles K. Russell returns from Cuba after two weeks detailing widespread hunger and disease across Havana and towns such as Marianao Santa Clara Sagua La Grande. He cites 260000 starved and urges Congress to fund relief at 20000 per day via US consuls to avert further deaths.
The first session of the sixth conference of the foreign mission board of the United States and Canada convened in the Methodist building. It lists 33 evangelical foreign mission societies with 1,003 principal stations and 6, 430, 266 communicants, plus 34, 870 additions last year and native contributions of 50, respectively. Canada shows six societies with 89 principal stations, 113 native churches and 9,141 communicants. Canadian contributions reach 283,706.
The annual meeting of the Episcopal Church Temperance Society of America in New York elected officers. Bishop Doane of Albany presided. General Steve Graham reported strong progress over the past year. Women’s auxiliary officers were named, all from New York or Tacoma, with Miss H J Graham recording secretary. A later item announced plans to build a railroad into Yukon via the Dalton trail by A C G Bratthaber and the Rothschilds.

A heated civil service debate closed without a vote on legislative executive or national reform bills. The majority signaled intent to repeal but not modify the law, while Speaker Grosious defended the act in a two hour address. Perspectives varied on future chances to address the bill.
In Washington January 12 the senate discussed a bill to grant 100 a month pensions to Margaret Butler Made and Henrietta Meade, daughters of late Major General George G. Meade. Gallinger moved indefinite postponement while Allen urged calendar consideration, warning that broadening pensions could swell the list into billions.
Hawaii and Washington Jan 12. Senator Davis Minnesota chairman of foreign relations spoke two hours in executive session urging annexation. The speech argued US fostered and protected the islands from the start and intended to make them an integral part of the American domain despite a brief post office confirmation dispute.
Wastuxcrox Jan 12 The senate committee on finance met to consider the Teller resolution urging payment of the national bonds in silver as well as gold but postponed action until the next committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday next week.
An uprising in the Seminole nation results in 25 citizen deaths in Pottawatomie county Oklahoma Territory. Armed Indians avenge the burning of Lincoln McGessey and Palmer Simpson, two Seminole men linked to the murder of Mrs. Lear of Maud post office. A special trainload of armed citizens heads toward Earlboro near Maud amid high excitement.
A Rome dispatch reports King Humbert of Italy is named co-respondent in a divorce case involving the Duke of Visconti. The duke, head of patrician houses, seeks dissolution of his marriage in French courts where divorce exists, amid long rumored intimacy between the king and the duchess.
