Terrible Tragedy at Merrill Ends in Double Self Destruction
Hibbard Vachereau from Oregon sought to persuade Mrs. Al. Quick of Merrill to abandon her husband and child and return west. He shot and likely fatally wounded her, then killed himself by firearm. Mrs. Quick’s companion narrowly escaped harm from Vachereau’s gunfire. Early Marshfield residents recall Vachereau living there years ago. Al Quick, conductor on the St Paul road, was a noted baseball player with The Rivals around 1896.

Death of William Bartels Prominent City Resident
William Bartels a former police justice and prominent local figure died at Marathon county asylum near Wausau list Saturday. Remains were brought here for interment Tuesday. He left the city about ten years ago for the west and returned years later, becoming an inmate at Marathon county institution. Survived by four children Otto Bartels and Miss Emma Bartels both of this city and two other sons.
