First Count Of The Big Voting Contest In The City

Saturday saw a large turnout as voting closed at 7 30 p m for the popular Lady contest. Alderman J J Varney and officials tallied votes with Louise Seubert at 79375, Laura Anderson 62000, and Marvel Hayden 46100 winning the top prizes. The first count counted many names and set the stage for later tallies.

Forty Hours Devotion at St John’s Church Next Week

The Forty Hours Devotion will be observed at St John’s Catholic Church from Sunday to Tuesday with daily services at 730 p m Rev Fr Volz in charge assisted by other priests Sermons in English will be delivered by Rev Fr Emet of Stanley on Sunday Rev Fr Gaas of Edgar on Monday and Rev Fr Trompeter of Fairchild on Tuesday Local congregation holds the event in a period of special devotion.

Fred Sieg longtime city resident died Friday after a long spine cancer illness. Funeral was held from his home Sunday with burial in the city cemetery. A native of Germany he was 68 years old and leaves a widow two sons and a daughter.

Mrs. Jacob Weiss age eighty two committed death by her own action at her daughter Mrs Sches chi s home on west C street using a razor. Schaefer Company Plans Wausau Cheese Branch

The P. J. Schaefer Company will extend its business by opening a Wausau branch run by Elmer Erickson to meet the rising importance of the Marathon county cheese industry. Marshfield to Host Five-Week Central Wisconsin Fair Circuit

Central Wisconsin State Fair officials A G Pankow and F A Noll met in Wausau to set dates for five fairs in the circuit. Marshfield opens August 20 21 22 and 23 with two other weeks for Merrill Wausau Stevens Point and Antigo. New plan seeks five straight weeks of shows attracting major attractions and boosting business for Marshfield.

First Preliminary Declamatory and Oratorical Contests Planned

Plans are set for the high school first preliminary declamatory and oratorical contests to be held Monday and Tuesday evenings at the school, with six contestants per department advancing to the final home contest on March 22. Winners go on to league and state contests if successful, with Monday night for boys and Tuesday night for girls, judged by local officials and out of town judges for the final. Company A defeats Watsal Business College 32 to 19, marking a second win over the college team this season.
