Cup and Gutter System Boosts Turpentine Profits
Washington reports Dr. Charles Herty of the bureau of forestry outlines a cup and gutter method for tapping longleaf pines that increases turpentine output by about 23 percent and yields higher quality rosin. The system, using an earthen cup and two gutters, reduces tree damage versus boxing, requires little labor change, and is rapidly replacing the old method across the turpentine belt as forests decline.
