Marshfield boys visiting Wausau for two games found themselves outplayed by two wins for Wausau in a close set. A disputed umpiring call and team financial squabbles colored the visit, with thefts and jests altering the mood as Palmer of Marshfield pulled a practical joke on Wausau.
A bolt of lightning struck the Wharfield residence during last Sunday evening causing a loud crash and damage. The live wire melted and shattered a mirror, ignited curtains, and split the wall causing minor fire and a startling close call for Mr. Wharfield and his two children who escaped unharmed.
The year old son of Matt Bartin from Richfield wandered into the woods while searching for cows last Sunday. Darkness fell as he lost his way and exhausted he sat by a stump and slept through the night. He found his path home by daylight to tears of relief from his parents and neighbors who had hunted all night.
Frank Teschen of Hewitt reported from Grand Rapids that police recovered the nude body of Charley Pagel, a young, unmarried Biron paper mill worker, found on an island below town after an attempted river crossing. An inquest reviewed the death, with Pagel last seen Saturday night and presumed to have drowned after cramps while swimming to recover his skiff.
Monday evening an alarm from the 4th ward reported a fire at Ed Garvin’s house, occupied by Jas Forestal. Firemen arrived swiftly, found flames in an unused basement under the kitchen, likely started by boys with matches. Damages were minimal, but the response showcased the company’s efficiency.
In Camp Next Week Company A of this city will depart for Camp Douglas next Monday in full uniform and fully equipped to complete the paraphrase of a soldier boy. Capt. Martin will command about fifty strong and rifle range prep is highlighted. John Stauber regimental bugler and Peter Hansen with Feork week serve as buglers. Quartermaster Joseph Brest leads the commissary with cooks James Barrett, his wife, and Cully Mess.
