The Water and Light Commissioners state the Marshfield News misrepresented finances and affirm the city has run behind by 2000 dollars since the plant transfer. They provide figures up to January 1, 1905, and issue an electric light resolution dated February 3.
A blaze yesterday morning destroyed the Hoffman residence one mile south of Unity killing Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hoffman. Their 11 year old grandson escaped badly burned after leaping from a window. the nephew Paul Bruer’s family also fled in night clothes. The inquest convenes at the scene today as investigators probe the fire’s origin amid a controversy over electric light and waterworks finances reported in The Connors organ and The Times. The building and its contents are a total loss.
Judge Stevens rules the Connors case against the city in circuit court finding no fraud and upholding the purchase value. The decision requires a ballot vote for such municipal purchases. if unchanged, water and light plant ownership may revert to bondholders or a new corporation, threatening progress and raising taxpayer burdens.
