The Calhoun County Agricultural Society fairs open with fine weather and a lively first day. Exhibits fill floral hall and the speed department, with robust displays from merchants, manufacturers, and agricultural interests. Sheep pens overflow with Shropshires among the top entries as the long-running event resumes its seasonal glory.
The fairgrounds host crowded displays including pigs cattle and draft horses with the windmill, buggy and agricultural implement sections well attended. Notable entries include horsemen from Homer Albion Paw Paw and Marshall with a 2 PM horse race and a 2:25 pace plus bicycle events Thursday and Friday with multiple prizes and entries from Battle Creek Battle Creek and Marshall.
The Sure Winner competition has distanced and the campaign moves toward securing good will and patronage for The People’s Clothier as the race enters the final stretch.
The Republican state convention met in Grand Ramos on Sept. 27 to nominate candidates for associate justice of the Supreme Court and secretary of state. Judge Frank A. Hooker led the eight-candidate judgeship field, winning after four ballots with 385 votes to Cahill’s 346. Hooker was escorted from the floor after the nomination, seen as the strongest choice. John W. Jochin was nominated by acclamation for secretary of state. The convention was representative, with Hon. D. N. Alward and Hon. T. F. Giddings serving in leadership roles.
