County Treasurer Fisk reports Calhoun has 4,694 public school pupils and will receive a per pupil apportionment of one dollar. State Superintendent Jason B. Hammond disburses funds to cities and townships including Marshall Newton Sheridan Tekonsha Clarence Otwis and others totaling 11,604 dollars.
A noon county report outlines a new law penalizing false declarations by assessors with prosecutions and fines from 100 to 1000 dollars or 30 days to six months in jail. It notes personal property assessments may broaden tax bases and lower rates for some taxpayers.
The court issued rulings in People vs Ready and Simmone et al v Vanbenthuysen. Ready, tried in the circuit court, was sentenced to ten years for assault and robbery. the Supreme Court reversed, granting a new trial. This marked attorney Chas Mains's final court argument. In Vanbenthuysen, the Supreme Court reversed Judge Smith, transferring jurisdiction to probate court, over Hatch's appeal.
Sheriff Williams reported his valuable saddle horse stolen last Friday night by Victor Harris, a Battle Creek youth freed on suspended sentence. Harris, last seen fleeing toward Battle Creek, left the horse tied in an open field near Kalamazoo. He remains at large as authorities continue search efforts.

In Eckford, residents oppose a nearly ten mile drain project named for Ball and Patterson. Originally 15 petitioners supported it, four switched sides, leaving eleven while opponents number 42. Judge Lanse heard Drain Commissioner Meade request for commissioners to condemn the right of way yesterday.
Hatch proposes a state like reform creating a three member county board of auditors to examine and endorse county accounts. The plan requires one year trial with annual costs of 1200 to 2500 dollars. Meetings set monthly in Marshall with bid rules for purchases over 100 dollars.
Rev D F Fox opened the Star Course with a lecture at the opera house Tuesday night titled How I Made My Fortune. He described his fortune in word pictures, some excellent some weak, and urged government control of telephone telegraph and railway lines like the mail service.
A large attendance at The Monday Club featured Mrs C G Gorham Mon roe and Mrs C Brewer presenting a paper and talks. Brewer discussed the progress of music in America with historical notes from New England forefathers. Miller spoke on the growth of rationalism, delivering an earnest hour defending the speaker’s mastery of the topic. The club adjourned to meet again in one week with Mrs Smalley.
The famed Herrmann illusionist Leon Herrmann appears at the Eagle Opera House Tuesday night only November 21 with a sensational program of sleight of hand and remarkable feats. Alexander and Leon Herrmann, heirs to Carl Herrmann, have long been noted for mastery of magic and mystery. Seats are on sale at Swartwout's.
A Burlington store, owned by George C Cole, was entered last Thursday and a large quantity of silver ware and cutlery stolen. The suspect is described as a 25 to 28 year old man, about five feet tall, dark complexion, black mustache and eyes, wearing a dark coat. Sheriff Williams offers a $25 reward for arrest and conviction.
Auditors and other officers are authorized to perform duties for Calhoun County as advised by the board of supervisors. The secretary earns 660 per month plus railroad fare. The two other board members are paid 3 per day for actual and necessary work, not to exceed six days per calendar month.
A broken cross sewer from the steam condenser at the Hurd mill caused flooding after contractors failed to fix it. The council met to arrange the fix, condemned the cross sewer, and directed Mr Stevens to relay it. Workers labored over Saturday night and Sunday to shift tile past the mill sewer, with work continuing.
