The Springfield convention nominated Bushnell for governor on the sixth ballot. General A W Jones of Youngstown was named lieutenant governor by acclamation. The platform denounces the Democracy and endorses Tariff and monetary policies. Foraker supporters gain control of the state committee as ex governor Foster reads the platform and the party pays tribute to Walter Gresham.
A compilation from Lansing and nearby towns reports legislative actions in Michigan and Ohio including tax and lobbyist bills, constitutional adjournment, and appropriations. It notes arrests, fights, a murder trial, insolvency findings, and miscellaneous local incidents across multiple counties and cities.
Reports from May describe extensive forest fires across the northern peninsula causing heavy damage. Farmers assist towns to save lumber camps while a bush fire threatens western outskirts and Allouez mine area. Lumber firms deploy workers to fight blazes in Luce and Schoolcraft counties as more property faces danger.
News of the Pacific Mail steamer Colima disaster reaches San Francisco with fourteen passengers and several crew saved from a small boat. The 2,016 ton iron vessel, built in Philadelphia, sailed May 18 and foundered near Mazatlan while en route from San Francisco to Acapulco. Captain J E F Taylor led the ship. many officers and crew aboard, including first and second officers, engineers, and purser. Authorities suggest a machinery accident caused the loss. some survivors reached Mazatlan, others unaccounted.
The American Line steamer St Louis passed Sandy Hook at 2 45 p m on her trial trip to the eastward and headed toward the bar. She appeared splendidly with new masts, visible upper works, and two black smokepipes with a white band. The salute was fired in honor of the arrival.
