Horrific mill accident kills Thomas Lewis at Rolfe’s
An early Tuesday accident at Rolfe’s four mill near the Michi Central depot in Marshall fatally injured Thomas Lewis. He was crushed when his clothing entangled on a shaft while he stood in the basement, suffering gruesome injuries before dying at his South Sycamore home later that day. Lewis, a longtime Marshall resident and bachelor, had been helping in the mill for about two weeks. a brother from Gregory, Michigan, was notified and his remains were sent to Ann Arbor for burial.

Frederick Augustus Kingsbury died Saturday at age 91 in Marshall. Born April 6, 1810, in Schaghticoke New York, he moved west at 25 and made Marshall his home. A cabinet maker by trade, he helped found Michigan’s Republican Party and remained active politically. An ardent Presbyterian, he retained notable memory and strength till near the end. A large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the burial of George Colling on Monday afternoon. Born in Marshal on April 28, 1643, he grew up helping in his father's meat market, later taking over the business. As a youth he enlisted in Co. B, 6th Michigan Infantry at the outbreak of the rebellion and served with honor until he was discharged in 1860.
