Mackinac Island described in 1884 travel sketch
A detailed 1884 correspondence from Mackinac Island, Michigan, praising its scenery, climate, and historic fort. The piece describes the island’s layout, natural wonders such as Lovers Leap, Arch Rock, and Sugar Loaf, and notes on its population, forests, springs, and legends. It recounts a drive with a local hackman, visits to the fort and Astor era fur-trade buildings, and mentions the island as a developing summer resort with cultural lore and rail-station era glimpses.
