Torture of a Slave Report Finds Arabs Punished in Zanzibar
A Zanzibar Gazette account cited by the British antislavery group describes Muftah, a slave in Pemba, chained to a wall with iron bars and a clove tree, starved for seven months to prevent escape. He was rescued by Dr. O’Sullivan and sent to Zanzibar. Ali bin Abdulla was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and deportation, with a 6000 rupees fine. Abdulla’s son’s arrest warrant was ordered.
