O G T Soneck of the Library of Congress reports four famous American tunes dominate patriotism surveys. Dixie tops the list, Yankee Doodle remains a national air, and Star Spangled Banner Hail Columbia and America are analyzed with variations and origins detailed.
The Red Men's Banquet in the former Ted Sworn room honored oldest members J M Green G B Wouk and Henry Lockhart by seat of honor. Toastmaster H D Bullard presided as Mayor W T Hollenbeck and Judge Fenton Booth gave toasts. An orchestra led by George O Baird Russell Brown Clarence Black and Ruth Surat provided music. The Seminole Tribe claimed over 200 members. A Christmas dinner at the Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane in Anna featured roast goose and turkey 2000 pounds oysters 100 gallons and 3400 pounds of candies with patients dancing Friday and the band visiting wards on Christmas Day.
An old red barn owned by John Claypool opposite the electric light plant was torn down to make way for improvements. Built in 1836, it served the stage mail, as mail moved by stage before the O M and T H A St L railroad era. Only one veteran driver remains, John Rector, 84, who began as a stage driver and mail carrier in 1849.
The year ending December 30 1909 shows 2767 instruments filed in the circuit clerk's office with fees totaling 2017 15. The county clerk issued 183 marriage licenses paying 183. Clerk Fredenberger issued 500 local hunting licenses and no foreign licenses. Ed Emerson notes 45 burials in Marshall cemetery in 1909 versus 43 in 1908. Birth and death counts in the county are still incomplete.

During the cold spell the Wabash Gas Co reports frost on meters causing interruptions. Some customers have built fires near meters to relieve the cold, which risks damage and accidents. The company advises pouring boiling water over the meter and wrapping exposed pipes to keep out the cold and ensure better service.
Judge W B Scholfield held his first session in Clark County Monday. The first case, W T Craig, jailed on a bicycle theft indictment, pleaded guilty and, being under age, received an indeterminate sentence of one to ten years in the reform school at Pontiac.

Miss Elsie Cole and neighbors planned a Christmas surprise for the county almshouse inmates. A tree with Santa and gifts delighted thirteen residents aged four to seventy five. Mr. and Mrs. Cole and the Norris sisters organized the event and received praise.
County Superintendent Drake reports Marshall district has 1570 children with 1106 of school age, toppling Casey which lists 1475 total and 1012 school age. 1908 figures show Marshall gaining slightly while Casey grows. Martinsville and Westfield trailed. County totals show 10788 children with 7476 of school age. State funds totaling 4543.27 spread across 19 treasurers. Drake has made 88 school visits with 16 remaining.

Friends recount a skunk encounter that led to a gun misfire and a series of odd behaviors including wandering to Oakfield and the depot. He contemplates study to hunt Clark county wildlife before venturing out again.
Frank Eldredge tried to shoot himself Monday morning around 5 80 o clock in the heart region. Millie Maynard had refused him and left his suit. He returned to plead, then attempted the act Tuesday. He survived and is slowly recovering. Maynard doubts the seriousness of his threats.
The York Township Sunday School Convention will be held at Beulah Brick church on January 2, 1940, starting at 1 30 p m. Devotion led by Mrs. Jane Prevo, with lessons by Mrs. D W Hull and others. House to house visitation led by Albert Wright, many departments and teachers listed, singing improvised with broad participation. Harry M Craig serves as secretary with Mrs Cary Marvin as provisional president.
The heirs of Samuel Smith offer the deceased’s residence at 614 South Fifth St for sale. The house has seven rooms a summer kitchen barn and outbuildings on half a block of ground. Call Jacob Metz at 611 South Fifth.
Mrs. Frank Hurst hosted a dinner for her Sunday School class at her South Sixth Street home. Music by Miss Ruth Hurst Clarence Black and Fenton Mathews enlivened the evening as eleven members of the class attended.
