Saving to Save the Country The Clothes Question
An address by Paul M Warburg argues that small personal savings in clothing could free vast resources for World War I effort. He calculates the material, transport, and labor impacts of a single new suit and urges universal belt tightening to support war production, warning of delays and higher casualties if waste continues. He contrasts American voluntary restraint with Germany’s wartime economy, and calls for citizen cooperation across all sectors to bolster supply, reduce prices, and aid allies.
