A Washington letter praises British forces for Lens and predicts Germany’s collapse by early 1919. The author recounts selling his Ford amid petrol rationing and street restrictions, lamenting automobile dangers and wartime controls while hoping for a grand parade on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Chicago oil drillers in Dolson township halted a 720 foot well after striking heavy salt water. They may attempt another test in the same area.
The war effort ends voluntary enlistment with recruiting offices closed nationwide. Only the Marines offer voluntary service, while all other branches require men to enter under the draft.
From France Lieut Inman son of Rev Inman of Westfield has arrived to train new machine gun personnel in the United States. About 200 officers are recalled for training. The Local Registration Board reports a call for one man to Mooseheart Ill for cement work and Wilbur Kellogg goes to Camp Grant to train as clerk of the District Board in Champaign. The physicals for the August 24 registrants began yesterday.
Hon H C Bell will speak Saturday at 2 30 in the court house on the war and its important points. He aims to meet many old friends. He will also speak Sunday at 2 30 in the Methodist church in York about the same topics.
Public opinion showed strength as nearly all motor vehicles in the eastern half of the country halted on Sunday at the fuel administration request to conserve gasoline. Locally only a few cars operated, drawing disapproving looks, signaling broad support for war-saving measures.
The third Choctaw Homecoming featured a large gathering. Elder Bert Eckles gave the welcome. Music and recitations filled an elaborate program. Talks were given by Thomas Craig, Thomas Carpenter, Esta Hedges, Ethelbert Bartlett, Lillian Brandenstein, Edna Spittler, Nellie Myles, Wm. Craig, James McCollum and Lola Blickman. Buel Morris was elected president and Maud Blizzard secretary treasurer. A $22.15 church repair collection was taken.
Little business was transacted at the council meeting Wednesday evening. Treasurer Greenough reported a cash balance of 14298 in all funds. Collector Claypool reported August collections for electric current 714, water 284, and 88 for special assessments. The collector's salary was increased by 5 per month. Marshall Riley reported five arrests with fines of 3 each. The annual tax levy ordinance was adopted. Discussion on State Fuel Administrator order to discontinue porch lights led to no decision, as porch lights are deemed more essential due to many shade trees. The city attorney was instructed to urge contractors to repair street paving to address pedestrian danger, a risk that may persist until war crowds fade.
The 52nd annual Clark County Sunday School Association convention will be held September 24 and 25 at the new United Brethren church in Westfield. State and local Sunday school workers will join in an elaborate program to provide an interesting meeting.
The new Livingston Methodist church was dedicated last Sunday and the debt on the building is paid with funds left over. Subscriptions to the building fund were read by Miss Menia Hutchinson, and a $50 decorating fund was overlooked with several names contributing small amounts including John Knox, Mrs Dan Thompson, Mrs Mamie Butler, Mrs Mollie Kendall, Mrs Mary Sears, Mrs Amelia Lewis, Miss Mabel Kessler, James Pickens, Nelson Knox, Martin Wernz, Mrs John Davison, Mrs Will Davidson, Mrs O Gunn, Mrs Nt Roberts, Miss Maud Stricklett, and Miss Meana Hutchinson.
The Board of Supervisors adjourned until tomorrow after hearing minutes of the last meeting and noting primary day. They accepted the resignation of Zane Arbuckle as highway superintendent now in Richmond Virginia, appointing Rodney Bell in his place. S. M. Scholfield named deputy state’s attorney during Olen Clements’ army absence at one dollar yearly. W. A. Keithley’s four hundred dollar printing bill was disallowed.
War Department designates Millikin University Decatur for free schooling and subsistence for young men 18 or older with high school education who enroll in the Student Army Training Corps this fall. Benefits include tuition relief, $30 monthly pay, and military training under a U.S. Army officer. interest should contact the Association of Commerce Decatur.
A mass meeting in the court room at 7 30 p m Tuesday Sept 30 will feature George Sargeant who spent one year with the Canadian recruiting mission speaking for the Salvation Army war fund. The fund supports war work and frontline aid for soldiers. Two Clark County boys wounded Harry A Johnson of Marshall and Milo Fessenbeck of Martinsville are listed with the wounded. Johnson is Wm H Johnson’s son who died recently in a hayfield incident. Fessenbeck is John Fessenbeck’s son from Martinsville who enlisted Sept 18 and has served in France for months.
Garrett Burkett v Nicholas Hurst et al seeks to quiet title. Marion Partlow v John T Perry et al involves foreclosure. Fannie Hall v Clarence Hall seeks divorce.
The will of the late J. M. Hollenbeck has been admitted to probate. Besides personal property the instrument disposes of 560 acres of land equitably divided among his heirs.
Vern Fox of three miles northwest of Clarksville died after a self inflicted gunshot wound. He walked to a farm he had bought, shot himself in the left breast, the blast injuring a major artery and he died about five o clock the following morning. Fox, about 25, left a wife and two children and is said to have suffered head injury years ago contributing to mental disorder.
The Hutchens family held the second annual reunion on the old home place in Auburn township with fifty one attendees. Families from West Terre Haute Grandview Dolson Martinsville and nearby areas joined as the event was planned ahead of two members entering military service.
Joseph A. James born May 9 1858 in Clark County died Sept 3 1918 after a paralysis stroke. He married Celia Michael Jan 4 1880 and had two children Guy and Fred. Guy died in infancy. A devout Bethel Baptist member since 1884 he farmed most his life, lived briefly in Louisville for son’s medical studies, and was a Modern Woodmen of America member. He leaves a wife a son daughter-in-law four sisters a granddaughter Joan and many relatives. The son, a practicing physician and county coroner based in Martinsville, aided his father during illness.
A county meeting led by Geo Robertson, county chairman, set plans for the fourth Liberty Loan drive beginning Sept 28. A quota near one million dollars is expected. Don Young D A Lee J I Brydon and La Cole were named to apportion quotas with district committees. B B Sturdevant Fred Sinclair C Snyder W H Drewel F W Greenough to serve as vice presidents. Harold Bright heads speakers bureau. Merrick Cox named county publicity agent. Mrs. Jayne B Kerr reappointed chairwoman of the Woman's Liberty Loan Committee.
Every man who has passed his 18th birthday and has not reached his 46th must register under the draft on Thursday. Failure to register carries one year imprisonment with no option to pay a fine. Excuses are not accepted. Aliens and native or naturalized citizens alike must register.
The State Council of Defense launches 250000 seed corn circulars statewide to urge early selection and storage to prevent last year’s shortage. District windows run Sept 15 22 in the north Sept 20 27 center and Sept 25 Oct 2 south as officials push two year supply and proper storage. Everett Murphy named assistant director of the United States School Garden Army will oversee Indiana and Illinois garden education efforts.
Vincent C. Williamson of Company BE writes from Camp Holabird Baltimore praising Red Cross comfort kits tobacco postcards and clothing items received while serving. He notes Y M C A services libraries and entertainments for soldiers and expresses readiness to go to France to help win the war.
Don Medsker writing from somewhere in France reports three weeks at the front. He describes pup tents on no man’s land, first line trenches, and entanglements while heavy artillery and aerial battles occur nearby. He notes shells, star shells, and the aim to visit Germany with the Allied army after peace.
Cecil Michael writes his mother from a rest camp behind the front. He recalls war scenes including an air raid near his dugout and a gas attack after. He notes Sherman’s quote with added gas and bombs and mentions the Crown Prince’s retreat through woods set afire by hob nails.
Lieut Garland Butler writes to Sal Handy describing being in the heaviest fighting in the Reims-Soissons area. He recalls his unit as the second company to cross the Marne when the Americans went over. He says he got through unharmed, though he does not understand how.
The music committee of the Congregational church will host a Victrola recital on Thursday September 19 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Booth building north side of square. Admission is 25 cents and refreshments will be served. the public is invited to support the choir fund.
