Start Breeding Soon for Spring Pigs at University of Illinois
Urbana Ill October 27 For early March pigs breeding should start about November 7 and the good hog man is making plans for that date says R A Smith of the swine division College of Agriculture University of Illinois. He urges selecting breeding gifts from the spring pig crop during midsummer and feeding a growing ration rather than a fattening one. He warns against delaying boar purchase to breeding time and stresses letting the boar acclimate to his quarters. Boar and sow diets should be high in protein with skimmilk and tankage, and legume pastures utilized when available. Breeding records should note farrow dates as the old method of letting the boar roam with sows fades from practice.
