Why Called Old Dominion

The term Old Dominion arose from Virginia’s early status as a regal dominion. Edmund Spenser praised Elizabeth and Virginia in 1590, and in 1619 the London Company used a motto implying Virginia’s kingly dominion. Virginia’s seal around 1663 carried a similar sense, and Richard Henry Lee linked the epithet to those days as Virginia being one of five dominions of the Crown.
