In Washington the President vetoed the adjusted compensation and pension bills, sparking bitter debate as Congress nears its end. Supporters accuse vetoes of obstructing veterans rights while critics fear taxpayer burdens and fear a political campaign impact.
The Marshall Decoration day schedule includes a 10 09 assemble at the east courthouse door, band selections, cemetery marches with G A R ceremonies and a 1 30 assembly at the courthouse for a theatre trip and address by Rev Arthur Bartholomew. Memorial services are planned in Marshall Sunday at 11 00 with Rev J E Evans and in Livingston June 1 at 2 00 led by Rev T B Glendennin.
The boy scout meeting will now start at 6 30 Friday night instead of 7 00. All tenderfeet must pass two tests to become second class scouts. A relay race is set between troops 1 and 2. Joe Connelly Scoutmaster.
Rev. C. E. Pettit former Marshall resident and pastor of the First Methodist church of Charleston delivered the baccalaureate sermon at Greenup high school’s combined baccalaureate and commencement exercises. He spoke to the twenty one graduates and their friends at the Presbyterian church Sunday evening.
An all day Sunday school convention will be held at Snyder Church. The program includes morning sessions with lessons by J L May Marshall county president J L Hawker and Robert Casteel. Afternoon talks by J W Adams Albert Wright and a convention sermon by Rev J B Evans with an election of officers.
G. W. Herrod and his daughter Katherine of Martinsville were injured Tuesday afternoon when their car collided with another east of town near Weaver. Mr. and Mrs. George Sheridan and daughter Cuma were unhurt. The Ford roadster attempting to pass a truck caused the crash. The elderly driver was uninjured. The injured were treated at Marshall before returning home.
Government suggested painting all rural route mail boxes white with black lettering. Postmaster John W Lewis will notify route residents to cooperate and have rural carriers apply the lettering. The plan aims to improve appearance and visibility along roads.
Leo Gaddis Harry Shiveler Dave Godden and Jess Siverly were arrested Thursday on the same charge of contributing to delinquency. Each faced a $500 bond for release until the June term of court. Jess Siverly was released on a $500 bond signed by John Witel. the others remain in jail.
Judge Everett Connelly will give the address of the day at memorial services to be held at the Brick Church on May 30. A general program of interest is being planned.
C M Suilins sandpapered the front of his jewelry store building revealing its 1861 origin. The once slate colored stone now shows a light gray finish, removing decades of dust and revealing the second story lettering.
Mrs. M. Arnsmeyer of Chicago suffered a broken arm and hip bruises when a Cadillac carrying her son in law and daughter collided with Albert Shay's Buick driven by Wichita Falls on the slick west pavement near Doll's Orchard Monday morning. McClain received a knee injury while others escaped with minor scrapes. Injured were brought to Marshall for treatment and Mrs Arnsmeyer and her daughters were sent to the National Dixie Hotel to recover. Both cars were wrecked and moved to Sackler's garage for repairs.
Layid W. Sones sues Inez Jones for divorce in circuit court. The filing seeks dissolution of marriage and related relief. No further details on dates or court events are provided in the fragment.
The Good Handwriting Club of America presents master's diplomas to pupils who complete the Economy System of Writing in city grade schools. Miss Alice Malloy and Miss Virginia Prevo performed in a Wednesday evening revue at the Hippodrome theatre Terre Haute. They studied under Miss Ernestine Myers all winter in Terre Haute and helped their group deliver a successful show.
Mrs. Phoebe R. Behner aged 83 died Sunday at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the house with Rev. G. L. Huggins and assistants officiating. Interment followed in Marshall Cemetery. She is survived by two sons Melvin and Fred and six daughters Mrs. Alice Trefz Miss Carrie Mrs. Roe Gleek Mrs. Mable Wiley Mrs. Jennie McConnell and Mrs. Dorothy Carey.
Mrs Mary Huston aged 6S died at her son Vern Huston home in Milwaukee Wisconsin after a several months illness. The body was brought to her city for funeral services held yesterday at 2 PM. Interment was in Marshall cemetery. She leaves son Vern and daughter Mrs Susie Eggebrecht of Terre Haute along with many relatives and friends.
State mourns the death of Justice James H. Cartwright of the Illinois Supreme Court. Cartwright served 28 years on the bench and was renowned nationally. Funeral held at the family home in Oregon on Wednesday at 2:00 PM.
The Associated Advertising Clubs of the Wabash Valley held its quarterly convention in Casey. The morning session began at 10:30 with registration and 10:45 entertainment at the Lyric theatre, followed by a 12:30 dinner at the high school. Clyde P. Steen spoke on window displays and front the store put up, with R. K. Gouchenour of Sullivan leading a round table discussion. President George Brubaker of Robinson outlined future plans during the business session.
Mrs R C Melton entertained at her McCalfe avenue home in Chattanooga on May 7 with a tea honoring guest Mrs H B Higgins of Marshall Illinois. Six attendees helped in the dining room as about sixty ladies visited from 3 to 5 pm.
Rev E. S Wamsley of Indianapolis, a former Methodist pastor in Marshall county, will preach at Livingston Sunday afternoon. He has previously served the community about 55 years ago and is well known to residents of Marshall and nearby towns.
Dock Hornbrook of Douglas township sues Robt McCleary over the township highway commissioner race. Judge Paul Lauher presided in Paris. Commissioners L H Atkins and Herman Hollingsworth to open and count ballots. Defendant’s motion to dismiss overruled. case continued to Monday at 10 am.
A safe at the Randall Stephen Son Mill office was tampered with Tuesday night as the thief entered the offices and gleaned the combination but did not open it. The door was torn from hinges to access it, and the incident was found the next morning. Another similar safe incident occurred in Martinsville within a short time.
