Three Martinsville Teens Die in Train Collision
Three Martinsville High School students Helena Fraker Irene Shaffner and Carlton Payne were killed when their Ford touring car was struck by Pennsylvania train No 7 near the Homer tower crossing east of Martinsville around 5 pm Monday. Irene Shaffner and Carlton Payne were to be taken home after school and all three were part of the 1924 graduation class and a freshman class respectively. Funeral services were held for Irene Shaffner Carlton Payne and Helena Fraker at Green Moss M E and Marshall cemeteries with Rev Stout and Rev Fasig officiating.

John R. Hamilton of Mattoon won the Republican nomination for state senator in the 34th District after a circuit court recount in Clark Coles and Douglas counties. He edged Charles A. Shuey of Charleston by 24 votes, with a net gain of 43 from the recount. An entire precinct in Melrose township was discarded for missing ballot initials. Shuey will likely concede and not pursue further challenge.
