Old Soldier Herman Hoenig Dies After Long Illness
Herman Hoenig died early this morning at his daughter Mrs. John Tumney's home after a long kidney illness. He was 79 and leaves three daughters and one son. A Civil War veteran, he spent many years in the harness business in the city. Funeral plans have not been announced.

Car Skids Off Road Near Martinsville Wrecks Vehicle
Two Casey men en route home from Terre Haute Sunday morning lost control near Martinsville. Their car left the road, tumbled over a hill and through a barbed wire fence near Thos. Fawley’s home eight miles east of town. Both were cut by wire. Buxbaum suffered worse injuries but neither man faced serious harm. The car sustained only minor damage.

At the Board of Education meeting last Friday Prof J L Beeman was elected superintendent at 80 dollars monthly. Music instructor Miss Bailey from Effingham was hired. Final position assignments remain to be announced.

County Awards Road Contract From Low Bid
Six bids last week for concrete work on the National Road west of the city ranged under the engineer’s estimate. The low bid of 7220 by Mr. McElroy of Robinson beat the estimate by about 1100 and will fund substantial extra road work. Other bidders included Claud Taggart and Ellis & Gallatin of Martinsville. all bids were below the estimate. The contract will be let today.
