Death of Hudson resident Philip Shaffner noted
Philip Shaffner of Hudson Iowa died at his home around May 6 and was buried May 7. He was an agent resident here for many years, son of Abraham Shaffner who settled near the M. Alrey farm. He married Malinda Rupp and lived in Hudson for about 40 years. He became an invalid late in life but aged well and was well known in the area.

How the Pullman Car Originated
J L Barnes of Chanute Kansas recalls being a conductor on the first Pullman car run on September 1 1857 between Bloomington Illinois and Chicago. George M Pullman rode as a passenger the next morning doubting the venture. The car used a remodeled day coach with four compartments eight berths and candle lighting. Central City residents say Pullman conceived his sleeping car idea at a Russel Gulch cabin. He moved from Central City in 1862 and built the first commercially valuable sleeping car in 1863.
